18th anniversary of the "Monumentalazo" Emelec over Barcelona May 29, 2006 On May 29, 1988, the final game of an inauguration tournament for Barcelonas new stadium was won by a bitter enemy of Barcelona none other than C. S. Emelec. Barcelona set up the party but Emelec ate the cake today 18 years ago. Emelec defeated the “Yellows”, as Barcelona is known in Ecuador, with a goal scored by Ruben Beninca. Back in January of 1988, the fans did not like the team’s administration by two time Mayor of Guayaquil Luis Chiriboga, failing years got the best of the team’s fans, and to make matters worse Capwell stadium was up for sale, but the fans were not going to allow that to happen. “Che Perez” along with drums and screaming fans, went to pressure the administration for better results. This pressure resulted in Emelec wining its sixth championship. Eduardo “El Ñato” Garcia, recommended for Beninca, Baldriz, Falero and the genius Jesus “Jechu” Cardenas, this team went around Ecuadorian stadiums in winning style, and also inaugurated one on May 29, 1988 (Emelec 1 – Barcelona 0) Emelec beat Barcelona in this International inaugural tournament. In this International inaugural tournament the REAL Barcelona of Spain participated and was eliminated by Barcelona of Ecuador. The other team was Peñarol of Uruguay, the champions of South America, was eliminated by Emelec who surprisingly went to play the final match, to win and empty the stadium before Barcelonean fans could witness with broken sprits a first victory lap run around the new stadium of Barcelona “El Monumental” by Emelec.
