OK folks, here's this season's sticky. As always, please read from the latest post as the season progresses as I will be making lots of edits. Because it's a bit late, I have an extremely long list of "unconfirmed" names -- each season I go through every name and try to make sure that every player really is at the teams we think they're at, and with about 400 names in play that can take a heckuva long time. (Volunteers, anyone?) As a result I decided to just go ahead and get something out there that had all the major names on it and, hopefully, was at least mostly correct and up-to-date. I may be mistaken, but I thought Tim Howard was on a one year loan to Everton and not with ManUtd this season as is indicated by the full list above.
I have an honest question: Does Greg Sutton have an American parent? Because he was born in Hamilton, Ontario and raised in Canada. I guess I dont understand how he's a "Yank".
I don't know exactly how he got it, but it seems Sutton does have American (as well as Canadian) citizenship.
There was a rather lengthy article in big Dutch newspaper "Algemeen Dagblad" about an 18 year old American player called Stephen Schetter who's going to study the coming 10 months at the highschool in The Hague. He's living with a guest family there. He's going to play for 4th (or 3rd) division amateur club TOGB. According to the article Schetter was born in Sacramento California and played football for Sacramento United. TOGB is being coached by ex-international referee Dick Jol. Maybe not really interesting but I thought I'd just put it here just in case he's going to play for Chelsea in a few years time.

A ref whose name was pronounced "dick hole"? Man, the fans in this country woulda had a field day with that one. Dave, a couple of Americans playing in Vancouver that you can add to the list are Tony Donatelli, the ex-Temple player, and former MLSer Ryan Suarez. By my count, the Whitecaps have nine Americans plus an American ccoach.
The work in progress continues to... progress. Thanks to several of you for your contributions, many of which I am still working on. numerista especially has been putting in a lot of work researching Mexico-based players, which is definitely appreciated. This is at 159 players. Some of these are probably wrong, but there are definitely more out there. I would estimate somewhere around 200 or so, not counting very young players with local European youth clubs. The usual disclaimers about players based in Canada, players capped by other countries and players named Rossi apply. Not 100% sure, but I think U.S. citizen Luis Swisher, a defender who played last season in Poland, is in Guatamala with Xelajú MC. His father is an American, his mother Guatemalan and I think he has played for their national team.
Two sightings in Sweden: Kyle Zenoni has signed for Falu BS, a close-to-the-relegation-line side in the Swedish 1 division north (3rd level), the same league where you'll find Thige Dombrowski playing for Sirius (at the present # 2, promotion candidate) and Ryan Caugherty for Bodens BK (mid-table). Zenoni's relations with Dombrowski as well as swedes Antou Jallow and (I presume, though it's not mentioned in the article) Khaled Al-Ahmad from his college days helped him get the deal. Newspaper article DJ Countess will try out for Swedish premier league side Östers IF, probably for a position as back-up keeper as Öster recently lost their old one. Club site news In both cases it sounds like short-time deals, up until the season ends early November.
Nice catch on the Zenoni piece. I'm not surprised to hear this -- I was under the impression from some chatter I was hearing that Zenoni was being watched during or before his trials in Scotland and that he'd get another chance somewhere. Is there a deeper Sweden-UWM connection or is it just more or less coincidence? Doesn't appear to be any Swedes on their roster this year (and only one foreigner, a Scot).
I don't know if there were any Sweden->UWM connection before Khaled and Antou, but would say there is a UWM->Sweden connection thanks to Khaled (now coaching at Marquette). He has (had?) a business connecting Swedish players with American colleges and American players with Swedish clubs. He has been really successfull on the women's side, placing at least half a dozen players (mostly from the Illinois/Wisconsin/Minnesota area) with Swedish 1st and 2nd level clubs.
PJ Scheufele has signed a 1 year deal with Larne FC in Northern Ireland. Also in Northern Ireland, Dave Bulow moved from Limavady FC to Dungannon Swifts at the start of last season and remains there. Both are ex Cape Cod Crusaders players as far as i know.
Florida teenagers Andre Seidenthal, Luis Ivan Carrasco and Sebastian Otiniano, all of Kendall SC, spent the summer playing in international tournaments with Peru's Academia Deportiva Cantolao (U16s). They're now all back in the States. Link: http://soccerfla.com/2006/20060829.htm
A couple more from the lower echelons in Sweden: Almir Barbosa (New Hampshire Phantoms eralier this season), who might or might not be a YA (borned in Portugal, raised in USA since age 5) has signed a two month contract with Kristianstads FF in Division 1 South. I haven't been able to confirm Giallombardo's whereabouts but he doesn't seem to be at Southampton at this time. In other news, Jeremy Piette -- who was a Canada-based YA in 2005 -- has resurfaced in Puerto Rico, which I don't consider abroad because Puerto Ricans are American citizens. However, an article about his move says he has played for clubs in Denmark, Singapore, Jamaica and Canada and as I wasn't aware of the first three bits I will investigate further.
