Pick who is your selection for all-time best DC United Defensive Midfielder, while with DC United. The criteria is up to you: minutes, quility over a length of time, most brilliant moment, likeability, etc.

If your favorite is not on the list, then we can have a challenge knock-off election in a subsequent thread.

I'll start taking nominations here for Left Midfielder. Mario Gori, Dema Kovalenko, John Harkes come to mind.

The runaway winner should be a man who represents a small percentage of DCU's history.

    Ba-dump-bump.

Left mid noms have basically already all been put out there - Harkes, Convey, Dema, Gros. Even though he was primarily a right mid, Maessner should be on the list because he played left mid through most of 1999, including MLS Cup, after he came over from Miami.

    I am torn.
Richie was hands-down the most effective DM, based on his specific role in either covering Marco's ass, leaving him free to spray dangerous balls around - or in marking out a specific guy like Valderamma (who Richie simply owned) or 100Fires.
But Carroll is such a pure DM as far as reacting, getting in passing lanes, and cutting off second chances.

I just didn't know which one to pick...
so I picked my all-time favorite, The Baby Faced Assassin instead :D

edit: how come I can't see who voted for Nelson?

Aunger was the only one who would freely unload shots from distance to keep the opposition goalkeeper on his toes.

Richie should win any poll asking who would be the most likely player to kick the ball over the top of the goal from 6 yards or less away :)

Lazo Alavanja. Words just escape me about how he played. maybe someone could help out...

D-mid? Wee One. But in a year Brian Carroll might surpass him.

Aunger though has a special place in my heart.

Special cameo vote for Chino for how he took out Mathis on the last game of 02.

BC can surpass Williams when he can count the same number of rings on his fingers.

He is certainly a douchebag, I'll give you that. But I thought he always missed wide, or lobbed it slowly, straight at the goalie. Admittedly, I have put most of Albright's time with us in the darkest recesses of my mind.

Richie had a special knack for hitting the ball almost straight UP over the bar.
Lyle Yorks, former DC player and agent extraordinaire, was doing some work teaching a U9 girls team I was involved with and he knocked one up and way over from the penalty spot. I shouted "Who do you think you are, Richie Williams?" from the sidelines and he just lost it, almost fell down laughing - he came over later and said they constantly ribbed Richie about those shots in practice, it was nice to hear that from someone not on the team - made him feel less bad for giving Richie ******** ;)

One of the USA guys hit a Richie-esque shot recently, I wanna say Bocanegra or Gooch - hit it from 3-4 yards out, right over the bar - almost impossible to do, it takes a special talent :) May have even been in a qualifying game.....

Well according to Jack Edwards, hitting the post is "what he (Albright) does best"!

That quote still has me rolling.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it yet, and maybe I'm mistakenly nostalgic, but what about Ben Irofja for LM nomination?

He at least deserves a nomination, no?

And I second the Maessner nomination.

Incidentally, I guess Richie gets my vote for this one.

Just use "Lazo Alavanja" as a verb, adjective or adverb, nothing else will come close.

Lazo Alavanja-ing is not as bad as Scott Vermillion-ing.

    How's that?

Did he ever actually play left mid for us? Harkes had that position locked down when Iroha was here. He might have played it a bit in San Jose, but I thought Ben was exclusively a left back with DCU.

Are you implying that Vermillion was worse than Lazo?

    If so, I strongly disagree.
