Re: Turin Brakes okay so what are the brakes all about? If I were to take a listen, what's your suggestion?
Three tracks that you can grab here. Les props grandes to Jim for hipping me to these guys. The video is also highly recommended.
Re: Turin Brakes Probably more info than you wanted (yet less helpful, to boot!), but here you go: The band website is: http://www.turinbrakes.com/ Videos and such can be found there. They're a duo producing mostly acoustic-guitar-based stuff. The new one, JackInABox, hit #9 in the UK on the week of release. It's their third album (The Optimist Lp in '01, Ether Song in '03). I fell in love with the first record in '02 and, to date, the only time I've seen them live was an acoustic set (with a keyboard player) in September '02 when over in London. They usually perform with a full band. If you're popping over to Amazon or somewhere to check out some songs on the current album, early ones I'm liking are Over And Over and Last Clown -- fairly "typical" Turin Brakes, I'd say. Fishing for a Dream is the first single over in the UK. It's a little early days for me to have true favorites on this one (changing regularly). Off the top of my head, I'd say give a listen to Underdog (Save Me) or Mind Over Money from The Optimist. Both were pretty big singles for them for good reason. I'm also fond of State of Things. Emergency 72 was also a single. From Ether Song, you'll likely recognize Pain Killer (Summer Rain) as it was not only a single, but featured in a commercial (Volvo, I believe). Average Man and Stone Thrown are good ones. Little Brother is a bit more of a rocker. Long Distance was the opening single. According to their latest email, they're about to do a US/Canada run. Pollstar only lists a Philly date thus far. Here's the review of the newest from Allmusic: A small clip of the Allmusic review of their first:

What I really love is the fact that they seem to have Mod, Glam and Grunge band members simultaneously.
