If there's a special Independence rail pass, they should make note of it on their website. I was just over there looking under their stadium tab, and there's nothing in the drop-down list that would indicate you can use public transportation.

Well, it is called the independence pass by SEPTA but it is not really an endorsement one way or the other. I just italicized it because I like the coincidence.

As for the lack of options on the stadium website, that's why I decided to contribute my two cents to the forum. By offering free parking at the games, the Independence have done more than their share in making sure fans are accommodated enough. And when they decided on moving 17 miles closer to the city than last year's venue, I did my first backflip. However, it is my job to make sure no fan slips through the cracks. Last year, the lack of public transit options to a game really was an obstacle. (I did the walk, but could not do the talk.) This year, not so much, thank God! It's a breeze, relatively speaking.

Next weekend's game is a 7PM start. Although I will post all the adjusted SEPTA times, I am going to strongly advise against anyone using the train station in Chester for a game that ends after 9PM, particularly via walking and maybe even via the bus 113 or 109 which go from the stops along 17th street heading back toward the station near 6th street which saves that 2 mile walk. If you want to take all the information into consideration, or will be travelling in a group party, fine. But driving or taking the bus to the el is a safer bet for these later start games. Never Walk Alone.

Yesterday after 8PM the walk back to Chester Transit was quick, uneventful and I did not feel the need to wait for the 113 to get me back, and I made the 8:54 train with at least 10 minutes to spare. However the experience on the platform at Chester was undesirable and I now know why the Union and SEPTA bring in extra patrols on game days, and it's not just for directions and crowd control. Without the security forces, both platforms often become a homeless shelter. But although the presence of several homeless sleeping on benches made me feel uncomfortable, we did not feel unsafe at any time, nor was the fan group spoken to or threatened in any way. However, there was one woman, actually a train rider, in a burqua who shouted into her cell phone a lot of profanities and how she hated her private life being discussed by others, not conscientious of respectful volume nor any sense of irony.

If you do decide to take the train, keep in mind that the on time status is often updated via the scrolling digital board for Norristown heading in the direction of center city. The next two trains to Phila/Norristown, as well as the next two trains southbound, are all scrolling on the same digital sign board. Which side you should stand on is not necessarily marked well for Philadelphia! However, you must cross under the tracks from the Widener side (Widener also happens to be on the "PPL shuttle lot" side) to stand at the upstairs platform toward center city.

Philly fans (phans?), I think I might be road tripping up there in a few weeks. Can anyone recommend a hotel near the stadium? I don't know anything about that area, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

When you say near the stadium, Best Western and Days Inn have Chester, PA locations that are walkable to the stadium. Only if you want cheap and convenient.

Airport/Essington, PA hotels (~7 mi) and city line ave hotels (14 mi) are about $80 to $100 on the discount sites and are in a safer area but not too far from the Independence by car.

If you want to be a tourist, try hotels.com and you can stay at the Omni in center city for under $140 sometimes (overnight parking in the city will be about $25).

The Independence sponsors are Sheraton Great Valley (40+ minute drive from stadium) and the Crowne Plaza City Line. These are a driving distance from the stadium.

Wow this is great info. Thanks a lot. I'm planning to go to a game soon and this will help for sure. So from South Philly my trip should be this?

Broad street line to market-> el to 69th street ->113 to 17th and Melrose then a short walk? Ill probably be traveling alone so how safe is this route? I know 69th street isn't the best neighborhood.

You'll be fine. Don't interact with anyone. You won't have to leave the station to make the transfer, just go upstairs and follow the signs/ramps for 113.

Google maps is telling me though that your fastest direct route is the G bus out to the 37 to Harrah's/Chester and then switch to the 113 (80+ minutes). If you live near the G (Oregon Ave.) try to see if you can time that right because it wouldn't be frequent. This may be equivalent to the 45+ minutes on the 113, 20+ minutes on the el, and 15+ minutes on the subway, best case scenario. It's a good alternate, avoids 69th street and its problems and the return trip starts at 8:06pm. Not bad.

Using the times below from the ever helpful CHARGE! and, please take care to notice all available options when deciding how to get from SEPTA to the game.

    1. Park for half price (only $10, reasonable) or find street parking and walk 6 blocks (do not recommend)

    2. If car is no option, it is possible walk the < 1.0 mile (20 minutes) from/to Highland Ave. station, the next stop right past Chester. Chester Station is decidedly unwalkable. However, when arriving at Highland Park from center city, walk under the rail bridge and proceed straight down Highland ave for five blocks, cross through one traffic light. Proceed around Stadium drive until it becomes Seaport Drive, bear left all the way and you've arrived at the Lot B of PPL Park.

    3. Chester train station has cabs waiting for about $10 or less you can get to PPL and get a number to call for pick-up and return. This is reliable, quick and safe, but a little pricey. Carpool!

    4. The 113 bus runs between Chester station, 69th street, and PPL park but only once per hour. Schedule Details below.

From Delaware: Wilmington 2:36, Highland Ave 2:51, Chester 2:54
Return to Del: Chester 6:03/8:03, Highland Ave 6:06/8:06, Wilmington 6:21/8:21

The only thing about the 20min walk from Highland I failed to point out is:

    1) wear soled shoes. the walk is mostly gravel, broken glass, needles on the platform, etc.

    2) Never Walk Alone... NEVER WALK ALONE! ;)
