Does anybody know why Clodoaldo only played in one World Cup tournament? He was only 20 in 1970, played very well and was an integral part of Brazil that year. Since he was so young, one would have thought he would take part in more World Cups afterwards, but he seems to have disappeared. What was the reason?

He shows up in 90% of the Selecao call-ups up until Germany '74. According to Ivan Soter's Enciclopedia da Selecao, Clodoaldo seriously injured himself 10 days before the start of the WC during trainings in Switzerland.

I know he had to retire in 1979 due to a serious injury - probably a continuation of the one in 74. The Selecao rosters do not show his participation between WC'74 and WC'78.

Yes, an interesting one. He would have been only 28 for the 1978 Copa. Who can forget that elusive dribble that started what ended up with CAT's goal v Italy in 1970.

Any other old fotos of him in a Brazil kit?

Thanks for the infos everyone. I knew he got injured shortly before the '74 World Cup, but I didn`t know it was such a severe injury. Seems like he never got back on track. Could have been there in '74, '78 and maybe even in '82 if not for bad injury luck.

I have just found this thread as I am a late commer at this forum.

I've did some "studies" by myself with the case of Brazil in the 70's and Clodoaldo was a name that was missed for WC74 & 78, since it should have been his best years age wise.

Another injured star that was missed for at least '74 and maybe even '78 was Tostao. Especially for the WC74, where Jairzinho wanted to be the selfish CF in stead of his gifted RW position.

    Others to be mentioned are.....

-Carlos Alberto could have played in '74
-Pele if Brazil hadn't won the '70 WC ;)
-Edu, Paolo Cesar Lima, Luis Pereira, Francesco Marinho could all be included at the '78WC.
-Leao was missed at the WC82, but he included as a resreve at WC86

Tele Santana included Leao in 1986 as a homage so to speak.
