I love international play as much as anyone, but this does sort of highlight the needless proliferation of internationals, now, doesn't it? Cobi Jones (just picking on him because I don't like him, but the point would prove true for hundreds of middling professionals) of America has well over 100 caps, yet Cruyff, easily one of the half dozen greatest players ever possesses only 48.

The reason Jones has so many, and others, if that until 1996 the US didn't have a pro league. The national team scheduled lots of friendlies so they could get lots of playing time. Cruyff also chose to cut his own international career short so he's not the best example.
