Well, we're less than a week away from what is being booked as the "game of the season". While not entirely decisive, the outcome of this match will dictate how the course of the season will more than likely play out. Nothing short of a Sporting victory is required to take an isolated hold of first place, while a tie will preserve Porto's slight lead, and a Porto victory will almost guarantee them a championship. This will be quite the game with much at stake...

Some great quotes were in this mornings newspapers:

    Cu had this to say:

"A pressão está do lado do Sporting que tem de ganhar"

My favorite comes from SCP defender Abel:

"Quaresma? Nenhum jogador me tira o sono. Estou tranquilo, tal como toda a equipa, em relação ao próximo jogo."

The Tripeiros will feel the heat at Alvalade I hope they bring their earplugs...

This is the game where their lack of defending ability will surely hurt them. If Cu tries to play his favorite 3-4-4...he is going to pay the price...

Sporting clearly have momentum and confidence on their side, however if you look at the results of this fixture over the last 20 seasons, Porto has an advantage, winning 10 matches and losing 7. Sporting cannot be complacent, or Porto will come out with an advantageous result (i.e. tie or win). Not only that, we also can't forget that Benfica are only 5 points back, so dropping points will not only lessen the ability to win the title, it'll also give Benfica an opportunity to get closer to the coveted direct CL spot that 2nd place brings. There is a lot on the line in this match...

I hope Quaresma comes back to haunt Esporting ;)

I think this will be a great game and it looks like Cu might just show how big his balls are and play again with only 2 true defenders :D

If Abel plays, I predict he will be red carded on a tackle from behind after Quaresma makes him look like a pylon :p

Porto could not beat Sporting at home twice this season (Pks dont count, if it was a league game it be 0-0) what makes them think they can win? a tie is a likely result but

Sporting will win this match 2-1 Liedson will score twice!!

    FORCA SPORTING

Alvalade will be packed with Sporting fans and Im not so sure if
Porto's hero and Defender of the year Mr. "Handball" Pepe will be able to stop Sporting this time? and is Lucho going to be out for this game? because if he is a Sporting win will be certain unless Sporting plays like sh*t.

Porto cant beat Sporting in 90 minutes of play 11 on 11 this season at home on two occasions this season I was talking about

congrats on going to the final, gives Porto insurance on a trophy because they are going down in Alvalade. Liedson Resolve

Porto lost to Benfica twice they have proved they cannot beat the best teams this season only Inter they beat once by 2 nice own goals.

Sporting, Benfica, Rangers, the better teams give Porto more trouble
but with that being said Sporting obviously was crap in Europe this season too.
when Porto faces the run of the mill Superliga teams they completely smash almost all of them (I know this will sound very stupid to some ppl and I will get bashed but for some reason I notice usually the average SL team doesnt put up as much effort against Porto than they do vs Sporting or Benfica I know Ill get bashed for this, but I know maybe it is because Porto dominates them more but I just wondering if anyone else has the same idea)
anyways these are both teams playing good at the moment I hope we see a great match with no bad calls on either side.

I always have to count the ref...because it's painfully obvious that when SCP play Porto they play againt 12.

You don't have to agree with it, and I am in no way making excuses...just pointing out the facts.

I was thinking about this game for the last couple of days, because the similarities are uncanny:

    http://www.record.pt/noticia.asp?id=702616&idCanal=24

I still remember the gritous in the club when Acosta scored the second goal on a pass from - Secretário! This game brought Sporting to first place in the 1999/00 season and they did not look back, ending a very long drought to win the title. Can history repeat itself?

I'd like to see Sporting win this and the league (Braga is too far back now:( ) But it would be nice for the team that had so much promise last year to finally win something. Either way, they and Porto will qualify directly to the CL.

I have a gut feeling that ref's won't be a issue in this game.

Just hope that Porto doesn't think of playing for the tie, because it could be costly. I'm liking the not much hoopla by the press for this match, but once the Lampioes game is over I'm afraid the controversies will start.

LFV is trying to stir things up, but lets not fall into any bickering. Let the best team win, and of course right now it's Sporting.

    thanks

This is a huge game for Sporting, I hope they give it 100% and of course I hope we win

Im so excited for this match it is all Ive been thinking about.

would be amazing for Sporting to win the title in its centenary year but first they will have to beat Porto which will be tough!!1

LIEDSON will make the difference he is hungry for the goal and almost always shows up in the big stage, and moments when Sporting need him most!!
Benni right now is nothing compared to LIEDSON
Sporting defence is the best in Portugal right now.

World Class only in your eyes...I would take Liedson any day of the week.

He works up top and doesn't "Punch" anyone...

McPunchy is better suited for the UFC Octagon then a soccer pitch.:D

Scored twice against Man Utd in 2003/04 CL QF

Scored the game winner against CSKA in 2004/05 CL

Scored in both games (including again the game winner in the Dragão) against Chelsea in 2004/05 CL

Scored twice against Inter in 2005/06 CL

The best McCarthy (and we all know why he hasn't been playing at his best) is in a different leage than Liedson.

Remember this one against Man Utd?

Now tell me it wasn't World Class.
