I host three metal shows on an Anchorage radio station(No streaming audio, sorry) and I come across a lot of releases from new and a few reformed older bands from the 80s(New Exodus absolutely smokes).I hope to update this thread with some CD reviews/recommendations and my playlists.I have a Friday lunch hour show and two 5 hour shows late Saturday and late Sunday nights.

I play my music by regions and mostly two at a time so people get more of a feel for what a band sounds like instead of one and done and then wait until next week. Most European bands are influenced by music from a classical background and most American bands are influenced by music from a blues based background. They are two completely different styles and I usually keep them separated.I like most of the European bands/styles but I'm not too crazy about black metal because of the poor sound and almost all of the vocalists sound very similar. Some of the newer black metal bands are good though.I like Norway's Old Man's Child and Finland's Kalmah very much.

I don't really care too much about lyrics. If you want good lyrics,go by a fvckin' poetry book or go read some greeting cards. If you can't play guitar then you don't get any of my money has always been my mantra. Most rock/metal lyrics are written by uneducated, drugged out alcoholics anyway, so why care about the 8-12 ideas they have every 3 or 4 years? If the music is good enough for me to listen to over and over, then maybe I'll give a schitt what the vocalist is going on about.

Here is my playlist for last weekends show.Death Angel was my band of the week and, over two nights, I played everything(that I have)from them.Last week's band of the week was Germany's Dew~Scented.

That's one hell of a track list. I wish they had a show like this over here.

From Braunschweig, to be more specific :D, although they have no chance against the local number 1, Headshot (featuring Matze Grün, ex-Protector)), who hopefully will get a deal soon. The latest album, Diseased, is ****in' great. And here you can witness Alex_K on the CD release party, back in '02: http://www.headshot-inc.de/pics/release/images/p%20(18).jpg (in the frontrow you will see a guy with a Maiden shirt giving the horns, behind this guy you'll see another guy with a shaved head and BEHIND this guy, you'll see a guy with beard and glasses wearing a Kreator - Endless Pain shirt. That's me :) And btw, my hair is MUCH longer than it looks on this picture (which is a quite ************ picture actually), just for the record ;). Oh, and while you're at it, you could also download some mp3s from their site (i recommend the already mentioned album, Diseased).

Yep, Act III is still in print.

I only play fast music. But thanks for reminding me,I'll add them to my "Overplay".Cliffy(Station Manager) says I can play a few transition songs from my Trash Metal to our normal new rock/alternative programming. They fit the bill perfectly.I never disliked Prong, but I never really liked them enough to go buy their stuff.I first heard them when I was getting into college DJing in the early 90s.The problem for me was the fact that I literally had a stack of 10 to 15 new CDs every week waiting for me to listen through to find out what was good enough for our metal show. With having so much music available to me, many bands were put on the "Must Have" list above Prong.

I became very picky about which songs to play because I was really the only one of the three metalheads on the show that was picking the fast tunes and left the slower ones for Chip.Wolf was picking the artsy, million rhythms per song with a whiny, cry baby vocalist kind of bands(Watchtower, Hades, Fates Warning, Solitude Aeturnus),Chip was picking the sludgey Metal/Rock(Danzig, Type O Negative, GWAR, Helmet, Prong) and both would pick some occasional Extreme Death Metal(Immolation, Incantation, Sinister, Autopsy). We also played lots of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Accept, Black Sabbath and even some Rush once in awhile but we only played tunes from Heavy Metal bands that commercial radio wouldn't play.No need to play "You've Got Another Thing Coming" or "Tom Sawyer" on a college radio station. There's just too much good music by these bands that's ignored by commercial radio.

Actually that leads me to conclude that I have never heard of them before.I do live in Alaska,y'know. ;)

    From www.bnrmetal.com ...

Named for the year that a plague hit Norway, 1349 represents one of the rising stars in preserving old-school black metal. The band formed in 1997, with an early lineup featuring guitarist Balfori, who left and now fronts Lunaris. Eventually they attracted the interest of noted drummer Frost of Satyricon, who eventually signed on as a full-time member. After a debut EP came their first full-length album Liberation, an exhausting, hyperspeed blast of old-school black mayhem (no pun intended), featuring an inhuman drumming performance from Frost and some of the meanest riffs heard in some time. In keeping with old values, the production is very thin, with the drums rather oddly mixed and the guitars sounding heavily distorted and buzzy. These guys aren't reinventing black metal, but they are as good if not better than the bands that obviously influenced them (think bands like Marduk, Darkthrone, or old Mayhem). Liberation is among the finest raw black metal albums to emerge in several years.

Doesn't sound like my style. As I stated in my first post, I'm not a big fan of old school Death Metal.I'll ask my occasional assistant if he has any this weekend.Band Of The Week next weekend?Carnal Forge.

Oh,yeah . . . One more thing. My cousin is the singer in Headstone Epitaph.Their music is similiar to Dio,Maiden,Priest and some fast Helloween thrown in here and there.Listening to that made me like bands like Hammerfall, Gamma Ray and Blind Guardian even more. It's not for everyone, but it does lure in LOTS of people that don't normally listen to Thrash Metal(ie:chicks).Sunday night was strictly a Death Metalish show.I normally like to mix in some Power/Prog Metal bands to balance out the brutality a bit, but I decided to do a Death Metal show and I had the fewest requests/comments in over a year. They all loved the show,It's just that it scared scared off almost all of the fence riders.

Part of the reason I play music from regions is because of the natural mix I get with most countries.Finland, for example, has a few killer Black Metalesque bands (Kalmah,...And Oceans,Catamenia), an old Death Metal band(Sentenced), an old Thrash band(Stone), a couple of newer Thrash Metal bands(Children Of Bodom,Throne Of Chaos) and a few Power Metal bands(Stratovarius,Sonata Arctica,Thunderstone). That's a natural mix of metal with a good flow to it and it seems to be popular with my listeners.

    PEACE

I don't really listen to this kind of music, other than their album Liberation. It's pretty far-out stuff. If you do track it down, try "I Breathe Spears" or "Riders of the Apocalypse."

    DUH!!

That should read "Not a big fan of old school BLACK Metal".I love 80s Death Metal. And I forgot that you mentioned that you don't normally listen to this style of music. What are some bands/CDs in your "Most played" list?Alex K or myself might be able to find a CD or two that might have a bit of crossover apeal.

Mostly, I like the Pixies, the Replacements, Sleater-Kinney, Fugazi, Rocket from the Crypt . . . that kind of thing. Thanks for the offer, but with rare exceptions, metal isn't really my bag. The 1349 cd is pretty cool, though. :)

What about Black Thrash (stuff like Desaster, for example) or first wave BM (Bathory, Venom, In the Sign of Evil etc.) ? Just out of curiosity ;).

It's been a long time since I've heard Carcass, I had a tape of them back in the early 90's and was starting to get into them but the tape broke and I wasn't able to replace it.

You mentioned the new Exodus, who's singing for them? I doubt it's Paul Baloff.

I agree that the new Exodus rips, and it's cool Souza's back singing for them.

Check out the new Mastodon ("Leviathan") and the new Dillinger Escape Plan ("Miss Machine"). Both totally smoke.
