Well.... I'd say do both. Post one here, and post it immediately afterwards on the big board... just omitting all explanation... and we need to try to keep it in the same style. Usually the big board is a closed thread... but with some of the people updating it not mods, then it's a different situation. So the big board can just be 100% draft picks. Personally, I like the picks and then the commentary. It's like that for all the threads. That said, I think we should try to avoid quoting the pics unless we're specifically referring to a pic in our commentary.
In hindsight, it would have perhaps been better to have the Picks thread seperate to the general discussion thread like they do for the World Draft. But no matter.
I didn't expect Ronchamp to go that soon, it's an all-time great, but I hoped to get it as a sleeper... great pick!
team sarabella/bluedaddy19 is gonna go with some home cookin' (2) The Gateway Arch 630 feet of stainless steel westward expansion monument, complete with a big lewis & clark museum underground and elevator rides to the observation deck at the top where one can see illinois on one side and missouri on the other (don't be concerned by any swaying on windy days... it was built in for safety!) by st louis law, no building can be taller than the arch, which was designed by eero saarinen and built from 1963 to 1965 (trams completed in 1968) * Arch construction slideshow, the monument's specs & a look at the elevator system going up each leg
I have fond memories of the Gateway Arch. Back when I was Dankinho my family went on a day trip to St. Louis. We just flew out from Detroit that morning, had a ball in St. Louis and flew back that night. I was probably 6 years old and I remember being in absolute awe of the arch and later completely thrilled when I found out we could actually go to the top. But naturally the best part was when I got to peer out the windows and look out over the city and the Mississippi. Great pick.
I personally think we should just leave it as is, which is putting three picks up on the Big Board together.
1st pick, 3rd Round - Petra after discussing with the judge, this is allowed to be considered a complex. If people are upset at that I can change it to a building and leave the rest of the buildings to someone else. I just think these buildings are awesome and really cool to look at. They were carved out of the rock! Even though I already picked a good represenation of architecture from this time period, I figured I could use another! Plus, the Holy Grail is located at Petra!
I just noticed this: Geography breakdown, updated: Continent Europe 20, North America 16, Asia 4, Oceania 2, Africa 5, South America 1 Countries 14. USA 6. France 3. Spain, Italy 2. Australia, Germany, England, Saudi Arabia, Mexico 1. Turkey, Russia, Egypt, India, Greece, Vatican, Peru, Cambodia, Mali, Japan, Jordan, UAE. Cities New York 5 Rome 2* (3, if you wanna include Vatican) Chicago 2 San Francisco 2 London 2 Mexico City 2 Paris 1* (2, if you include Versailles which is in the metro-region) 25 others tied w/ 1
This may be common knowledge, but as a child growing up in MO I was surprised to learn that the arch is as wide as it is tall.
I find that fascinating too. It's one of the things you learn on the tour. I should have posted some of my personal pics. I have a gillion of 'em. But I was too sick and too tired to do so this morning when bluedaddy made the pick for us.
Hey all... at work now... teaching the youth of America. Anyway, I have a deep love of this place... I spent a whole summer digging up an Anasazi pueblo near Cortez, Colorado. This place, too, is in Colorado, but it's definitely more important than the little rooms and kivas we excavated. Anyway, my pick this round is.... The Cliff Palace: Mesa Verde State Park, Colorado USA
Well, I spent a whole summer digging on an Anasazi pueblo in NM. I haven't been to Mesa Verde, but I've visited several others. Good pick.
For my 3rd pick I'm going for the mighty....Durham Cathedral Probably the finest Gothic Cathedral in Europe and therefore the world. The outside of the building is huge and imposing, standing on top of the hill in the centre of Durham it domminates the surrounding area. Inside it has some of the most beautiful and ornate stone carvings your ever likely to see. "I paused upon the bridge, and admired and wondered at the beauty and glory of this scene...it was grand, venerable, and sweet, all at once; I never saw so lovely and magnificent a scene, nor, being content with this, do I care to see a better." - Nathaniel Hawthorne, 'The English Notebooks'. "I unhesitatingly gave Durham my vote for best cathedral on planet Earth." - Bill Bryson, Notes from a Small Island. It's also just been voted the Best Building in Britain.
