We spoke about the tryouts that were run in Newark back in the Summer of last year. Jose Agugusto was here and I happened to go to one of these tryouts and saw a couple of good players. Here's the direct result: February 23, 2006 Ironbound SC Media Relations (a big thank you to Nuno Santos) Newark, NJ – Erika Taugher received her first call-up to the Portuguese Women’s National Team to compete in the 13th annual Algarve Cup to be played March 9-15, 2006, in southern Portugal. “Pure excitement,” was her only reaction when she got the early morning phone call from Head Coach Jose (Ze) Augusto with the news that she will be wearing the red and green. The team will play games against Ireland on March 11th and Mexico on March 13th. Ironbound SC hosted an identification tryout camp in July, 2005 in assistance of a partnership between the Portuguese Soccer Federation and United Soccer League to identify North American women to build the quality of the women’s national team. Erika attended and received immediate positive feedback on her abilities from the coaching staff. The Ontario, Canada native whose mother and family were born and raised in San Miguel of the Madeira Islands before immigrating to Canada, just had to wait for the naturalization process to be completed before she became eligibility to get the call-up. Erika is the first of 9 women selected from United States tryouts. Currently residing in Newark, NJ and attending school at the New Jersey Institute of Technology University, Erika is a standout sophomore striker at NJIT who led the team in scoring and an 8-6-3 record this past season. Erika has been playing soccer since the age of 4 and credits her grandfather for nurturing her love for the game. “I’m sure he is going to flip out,” Erika said about when he hears the news. Erika competed with premier teams and was with the Ontario Provincial select team when she was recruited after being spotted while playing at the Orange Bowl Classic tournament in Florida. “Being the first is great but I want to do well and not let anyone down,” she said about going to Portugal and competing with the national team being the first selected from all the other girls who attended the tryout event. In preparation for the trip, Erika intends to step up the morning workouts she has been having with her college teammates to stay in shape during the winter off months. “They now become more important and serious” she said about the immediate need to improve during those workouts. “Along with being excited for Erika, the club will continue to be a proud supporter of this program and will host another identification tryout later this year, at that time, we hope to be able to assist in identifying more girls who can help the team," said Albert Coutinho, Chairman of Ironbound SC. Any one interested should visit www.sportclubsoccer.com for date announcements. About the Algarve Cup… Usually a 12-team tournament, there will be only 11 teams in 2006 as Group C contains just three nations. The 11-team Algarve Cup will feature four match days – March 9, 11, 13 and 15 – with five matches each day. Group A features Germany, Sweden, Finland and Norway. Group B, USA, France, China and Denmark. Group C features host Portugal, second-time participant Mexico and Ireland. All the games are played at small venues spread out over the Algarve region on the southern coast of the country with the placement matches being contested on March 15. Since the expansion from eight to 12 teams five years ago, the Algarve Cup format has been as follows, although with just 11 teams this year, there will be no 11th place match. The teams in Group A and B will compete for the title as the group winners will play in the championship game on Wednesday, March 15, at the beautiful Stadium Algarve, built for the 2004 European Championships. The two second-place finishers in Groups A and B will play for third place while the third-place finishers will play for fifth. The Group C teams will be competing for a chance to play for spots 7-11 as the winner of Group C will play the best fourth place team from Groups A and B. The second place team in Group C will play worst fourth place team Groups A or B.
