Round five, ladies and gents Same stuff as always, you know the drill. I'm going to try to find some programs to convert whatever that format the new version of iTunes is using to MP3 and post the info here. Get ready for some Fiery Furnaces on my mix (maybe).
Likewise. Before we were paired up this month, I was planning on putting the tune "Chris Michaels" on this month's disc. I guess it'll have to wait till November's disc.
Here's an idea, though. I was thinking I'd sample something from one of the longer songs. We could do that and see what each of us ends up with.
Sounds good except I think your knowledge of technology is well ahead of mine. I have no idea how to sample a part of a track. I use a Phillips stereo component burner to make my discs rather than a computer. So, I think I can only burn whole tracks. If I'm wrong and someone can send me instructions on how to do it, I'm all for it. By the way, knowing you are a fan of The White Album, I was thinking of putting a track from DJ Dangermouse's Grey Album which is a mix of The White Album and Jay-Z's The Black Album. But I don't want to put it on if you've already heard it. Have you? It's pretty good stuff.
Hey Bishop...2 things. 1) Your disc is in the mail...sorry for the wait. 2) I don't think i got a PM informing me of my match for this month. thanks!
You can take my match with Iceblink. I asked to be taken off the list this month, but still got a match. Bishop, I PM'ed you about it but never got a reply. Did you get it?
aye, lack of Pm's by me all around...I've been out of town as there was a death in the family. Yes, Kenobi I got your e-mail. Alex, your discs will be out tommorow as I have no idea when those Wizards DVDs will be finished. Iceblink, your new partner is Unorthodox Yank...you guys check your PMs. Whew. I think that covers everything. Ahh...Meridian and ProfZodiac, your discs will probably go out tommorow too...finishing the artwork now.
I am in possesion of discs of molten rock. Or whatever kind of music is on 'em. I'll report back shortly.
I received Meridian's mixes a few days ago, but haven't gotten all the way through them yet, The first disc is a great mix of favorites of mine and a couple bands I like and that I should have heard but somehow slipped through, like Gene (a slightly harder rocking Smiths-esque) and Fuzzy, a girl fronted Indie-pop band that borrows an awful lot from Kelly's band (definitely a good thing. Not to be a kiss ass, but I own 3 VG LPs). Rockish Disc: 1.Birthday Party - Zoo Music Girl 2.Birthday Party - Fears of Gun 3.Dentists - She Dazzled Me with Basil 4.The Fall - cruisers Creek 5.Fastbacks - Go All the Way 6.Fastbacks - Gone to the Moon 7.Fuzzy - Throw Me a Bone 8.Fuzzy - Glad Again 9.Gene - Haunted by You 10.Gene - Left-Handed 11.Jasmine Minks - Think! 12.Jesse Malin - Almost Grown 13.Joe Strummer - Get Down Moses 14.Joe Strummer - All in a Day 15.Killing Joke - Loose Cannon 16.Long Fin Killie -Kismet 17.Long Fin Killie - Godiva 18.Monochrome Set - Monochrome Set (I Presume) 19.Oceean Colour Scene - Hundred Mile High City 20.SLF - You Can't Say Crap on the Radio Over all really good stuff. The only things that didn't really speak to me were Long Fin Killie (have to say I'd never heard of this Scottish? band before) and even though I love Nick Cave, I've never really gotten the appeal of the Birthday Party. The Fastbacks cover of the Raspberries was a pleasent surprise. I'll have to finally pick up some Dentists, too. I think I saw a used copy of "Behind the Door I Keep the Universe" at our local record store last time I was in. Second disc to follow when I get some time.
Well I've had some time to digest the discs, though there was a lot of familiar material, not that that's a bad thing, a good mixed tape....er...disc...is a good mixed disc. That said there was enough new material to have me scratching the auld bald head. I should compliment the packaging. Man some effort was put into it. Disc 1 Would That You Could Touch This Angel In A Clutch of Snakes? 01. Jawbreaker - Million 02. Joy Division - Warsaw 03. Mark Lanegan - Methamphetamine Blues 04. the Arcade Fire - Neighborhood 2 05. PJ Harvey - Ther Darker Days of Me Him 06. the DBs - Black & White 07. Interpol - Narc 08. Pretty Girls Make Graves - A Certain Symetry 09. Postal Service - the District Sleeps Alone Tonight 10. the Arcade Fire - Rebellion 11. Magnetic Fields - When My Boy Walks Down the Street 12. Polvo - Thermal Preasure 13. Swingin Utters - Could You Lie 14. Mark Langegan - Hit the City 15. the Trouble - Insight 16. Calexico - Black Heart 17. Bright Eyes - Joy Division 18. Death Cab for Cutie - Title and Registration 19. Sea and Cake - All the Photographs 20. Steve Albini - Autotune 21. Thermals - No Culture Icons --------------------------------------------------------------- I have to say right off the bat that I've never cared for Jawbreaker. I'll just leave it at that. Just a great Joy Division track. It's that simple really. I've been a big fan of Mark Lanegan's solo work but am unfamiliar with this one. It's a direct into the board fuzz freakout. Kinda sounds like the title. I think I prefer the earlier stuff. Now the Arcade Fire I've never heard of at all and it ********ing kicks. The singer gets a bit David Byrne at times (not really a bad thing) but it has a really cool wave/post punk feel. I'm going to have to look these guys up. PJ Harvey is always good for a good tune here or there. I ususally only like a couple of songs per record, but I like them a lot. This fits in that category. The DBs rule. Full stop. Made my smile all day to listen to this again. Interpol are one of those bands where I've heard the name for a while but have never actually heard them. I didn't even have any idea what they were about. This tune is hot. Bits of Bowie and Bauhaus (hey, don't run away) in there. The guitar line is simple and effective. I really, really liked this one. So far every disc I've received has turned me on to something new. Score a big one for the Bishop. Same thing with PGMG as far has hearing the name and having no idea what they're about. Interesting. I have a feeling I need to listen to this one a bit more, right now I'm not getting it. I'll either grow to love it or hate it. Lo-Fi-ish, pre-electronic-y thing from Postal Service. Some Eno type effects and a bit of 80s wave pop vocals. But more underground. Does that make any ********ing sense. I likes. "Rebellion" is another Arcade Fire track. Are these guys current cause it doesn't sound it (but that is certainly ok). I likes, I likes. I have a feeling I'll be buying some AF records. I once had the entire Magnetic Fields stay at my apartment. There were cellos everywhere. MF are quite accpetable. Ah, the North Cackalalacki contegent. I think I prefer Archers of Loaf to Polvo as far as math rocky/pop bands. Still if I want to calcualate degrees Kelvin to Fahrenheit for fun, this is a band I turn to. The Swingin Utters sound total wave and it makes me want to dance in a very proto 80s white boy fashion. Sign me up for a bit of that. The second Mark Lanegan track confirms what I was feeling before, "Whiskey for the Holy Ghost" is his best record. I'm getting a JD theme here. The cover's ok, but I don't really get the point of this, it just has bigger rock guitars, it doesn't really do anything exciting with the song in my mind. I hope I'm not sounding like a nitpicking ass. I love Calexico, but they've always sounded better live than on record. Don't get me wrong I love the records but there's just something that they haven't been able to translate yet. I wish I could think of the producer/engineer who'd be a good match. At the end of the day Calexico rock, and that's enough. I hate that acoustic guitar sound. I think I mentioned that from Nico's cd. This is a bit too whiny for even me, the king of folk misery. This would be the 3rd ones a charm of bands I've heard the name of but have no idea what they're all about. DCFC have that interesting thing where they sound like someone I've heard before but I just can't put my finger on it. Nice understated delivery, groovy guitar line, and plenty melancholy. One out of one Meridian's say two thumbs up. I'll seek some more of this out. Listening to it now it has a great little guitar hook (just a quick down stroke at the end of the riff). I dig the S&C and Tortoise thing. I have no idea how one would describe it. I appreciate Albini for being the guy he is, though to be honest he's not all the recordist people would have you believe. Still and all he sticks by his guns and that's ok. I agree with him about this issue. Not everything has to be dialed in. Thermals present some Lo-Fi indie rocking. This would be particularly good while driving somewhere, preferably somehwere where one was about to get lit up on cheap booze. I'll report on disc 2 shortly.
Disc 2 This Is Not Indie Rock 01. Turbonegro - Ride With Us 02. Shane McGowan - Donegal Express 03. Emmylou Harris - Making Believe 04. Nico - Fairest of the Seasons 05. Billy Bragg & Wilco - Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key 06. Roxy Music - More Than This 07. Small Faces - Tin Soldier 08. Sean Paul - Shake That Thing 09. Del the Funky Homosapien - Catch A Bad One 10. EPMD - You Gots to Chill 11. Craig Mack - Flava in Your Ear 12. Joe Tex - A Sweet Woman Like You 13. Prince Buster - Hard Man For Dead 14. Buddy Holly - Brown Eyed Handsome Man 15. the Ventures - Walk Don't Run 16. the Untamed Youth - Go Girl Go 17. Crystal Method - Busy Child (uberzone mix) 18. David Cross - Porn Convention ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Funny thing is I don't like Turbonegro either. Sounds like some of the bad Sebadoh stuff. Sorry man. Loved the Pogues. Shane is a drunk ass who is throwing his life down the toilet. It's just not funny anymore. This is a good track from the probably the last of his decent output. I ABSOLUTELY love this track. It's so hearbreaking it'd make a granite wall cry. Good track from the German chanteuse. I'm not a huge Nico fan, but I do appreciate most of it when I hear it. Who played guitar on this? It also sounds like Joe Boyd (or someone similiar) produced. This is by far my favorite track from the Mermaid Avenue. I think Billy & Wilco did Woody proud on this one. Again with the "this is my favorite track from this album" thing. "More Than This" defies explaining. If you try it would sound like you're describing a horrible song and this song kicks ass. In a very sauve way. I love it! I dig this Faces track. I love reggae, but I hate pretty much most JA music post 1985. This sounds like something you'd hear at a horrible 2 for 1 Bud Lite night bar. Or Seacrets in Ocean City, MD. Sorry man. I was only ever familiar with Del's "Mister Dobalina" from back in the day. This is a decent jam in the KRS one mold. Put your hands in the air. This track got much play around my group house in College. I had the misforutne to seem EPMD live once. Man 90% of rap music blows live. Sorry folks that's just my take. Notable exception to this rule is Schooly D who kicked much ass. Returning to topic, this tune takes me back. The Mack makes me laugh. Solid. The Joe Tex track absolutely ********ing smokes. It's sweet and it cooks along nicely. A+ This is probably one of Prince Buster's best tracks. A lot of folks have worked off of this rhythm. A good friend of mine had the extreme pleasure to work with PB. This is a really hoppin' Buddy Holly track. Sometimes I take tracks like this for granted. Brian from VG used to play this for every soundcheck. It has a special place in my heart for that reason alone. I've never heard of the Untamed Youth, but this is a super groovy garage-ish, 60s pop tune. This is a 60s band isn't it? If not they're right up there with the Lyres. I've dug most of the CM tracks I've heard. I'm not the biggest dance/electronica guy you'll ever meet but this is a pretty good example of the genre. The comedy bit a the end is pretty funny. Never head of this fellow either. When I first saw the back of the disc I thought it said David Crosby and I did a quick second of wtf? Smokin' work all around by his holiness the Bishop.
I got bmurphyfl's mix about 2 weeks ago and opened it last Friday. I'm weird that way - I won't open the mix until I've finished mine. It was two CDs, one all covers. I'm must say, there are some bands on these mixes that I'm really enjoying. My special favorites are Neutral Milk Hotel, Paul Burch, Smog and Beulah. I'm undecided about The Arcade Fire - the music sounds great, but I'm having some issues with the voice. It is growing on me, though. I like the selections from Koop and New Music Machine, but I'd have to have them be my little secret as my husband would want to know what all that jazzy, Frenchy stuff is. I'd run down some info on the covers, but it's in my car right now. Oh, and thanks for reminding me to pull that Shins CD out sometime soon.
I'm glad you've found some stuff you like on the discs. After a rough night, it cheers me up to hear you are liking them. Win Butler's voice is the hardest thing to get used to from Arcade Fire. But once you do, the album is a great listen. I may have screwed up the track listing. "New Music Machine" is the song title and Cornelius is the artist's name. There is a good chance I flip-flopped them. It should be a loud rocking tune that starts with the electronic whistle sound of a missle dropping. No problem. It only made it onto the mix because the movie, Garden State, had reminded me to pull it out.
Alright, both Iceblink's and Mad_Bishop's CD's are en route. I'm really sorry about the delay, both of you, but the Red Sox, beginning in mid-September, began to take nearly every waking moment of my attention. I've received neither of yours, but that's likely a fault of NEU's post office system, which blows big. I can go for one more month before I'll need to take a hiatus to build up my library some more.
I sure hope Iceblink's mix is from round four...cause i was just about to post that i sent out his stuff for this round. I'm sure that's the case. In any case, be prepared for at least 2 pieces of mail coming your way, iceblink
Ha. I misplaced Meridian's second disc, but it turned up yesterday, so I'm finally getting around to it. This disc had more tracks and artists that I'm unfamiliar with, and is"Not Rockish" as advertized. These tracks drift all over the musical landscape, from Rocksteady to Ambient Mimialism. But quite good. Not Rockish: 1. The Jazz Butcher - Partytime 2. Clientele - North School Drive 3. Micheal Marra - General Grant's Visit to Dundee 4. Mum - Green Grass of Tunnel 5. the Pines - I See Stars 6. Techniques - Queen Majesty 7. Mark Eitzel - Always Turn Away 8. Salif Keita - Souvent 9. Tim Hecker - Music fro Tundra Pt. 1 10. Pierre Laniau - Quatre Gnossiennes No.3 Lent 11. Scud Mountain Boys - Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves 12. Son VOlt - Last Minute Shakedown 13. Tortoise - Ten Day Interval 14. Martin Hayes & ? - The Lament For Limrick 15. Hazel - Everybody's Best Friend 16. Hot Club of Cowtown - Chip Away the Stone 17. Rufus ? - (I love you) For Sentimental Reasons 18. Hank Dogs - Rise 19. Gavin Bryars - Titanic Hymn (autumn) All Strings Not familiar with the Jazz Butcher, but this track is clever and grooves quite nicely Michael Marra is another Scottish unfamiliar to me, too. Reminds of Tom Waits a little. I think Mum are fantastic, and this track it a little non representative, but good nonetheless: not quite trip hop, not quite chill out. Very sweet and mellow. The Techniques track is fantastic, and has always been one of my favorite Treasure Isle singles. A really groovey rocksteady rendering of a great Curtis Mayfield tune. I used to spin this one a lot when I was DJ'ing a northern soul/rocksteady night. It was a great track to move from some uptempo tracks to a nice downbeat to fill the floor with the couples. Plus it has a common riddim that is easy to beatmatch. Is this from the Heartbeat release, 'cause it sounds less hollow than my copy. I think I prefer Eitzel's solo work to AMC. Good stuff I've had dozens of people try to get me into African pop, and I always like what I've heard, but I guess I'm intimidated by the huge variance to ever get into it too much. Salif Keita is not bad though. I've never been into minimalism, nor ambient. I hadn't heard of Tim Hecker or his psuedonym I wasn't This track is ok, but I'm not really feeling it. Pierre Lanuau comes correct with a classical guitar piece. Pretty. I'm utterly uneducated in classical music, as much as it shames me. I once saw Son Volt on a sunny saturday morning outside on our county courhouse square, not too long after Uncle Tupelo broke up. Ever since then I think I've been in the minority who prefers Son Volt to Wilco. Good, good stuff.
Actually, that was round three! Or four... or whatever the September one is, I think. I did yours and his at the same time, because I've still been overloaded... though I don't want out, dagnabbit! I sent his out a while ago, but he has not received it. Hey, ProfZ, pm me if it does not arrive tomorrow, and I'll send another out. This will be the first one I didn't send out priority! I'll send the next two day. When the previous one comes, give it to a friend... or enemy, depending on how you like it. it's got some crazy stuff on it! It's been nuts around here. We're in the middle of buying a new house and selling ours. We keep having to leave for showings and stuff! Good times! Anyway, like the others can confirm.... I'm slow, but I always get my stuff out! I'm coming into a less busy time with only three days of school where I'll actually have students... one day is veteran's day, I think. The other is a teacher inservice non-attendance day ... so I won't have to plan! WOOOO! Anyway, you'll both have your "celebrities sing" 9 disc compilations soon enough. Nimoy, Eddie Murphy, Don Johnson, Bruce Willis, Hasselhoff, Shatner... good stuff! Oh... and in between each track, I put in comedy tracks from Carrot Top. Except disc 9's final track is a 45 minute lecture I gave on the similarities between the Oracle in Oedipus Rex and the three witches in Macbeth! You excited or what? Double, double toil and trouble... your discs are coming in wrap of bubble.
