I dont know much about asian football, but IMO if you want the continent to grow (in football terms), you dont put a team that is 1-2 classes above most of the competition, and will regularly take a world cup spot from the lesser teams who would benefit massively from the world cup experience.

Why not? With Australia in the AFC they have to play a better opponent in an important competition (qualification) far more often than they would if an additional "old" team would get three more games at the WC.

Australia may be better than most teams in Asia but they are hardly world beaters. Its not as if everyone there is outclassed by them. I would guess especially the Arabic teams profiting very much from playing regularly against Australia and their physical, "European" style.

Mahindra Satyam are sponsors for this tournament??

    Haven't they filed for solvency??

I bought shares at approx 125 Rs/share last March and they are already down at Rs 85/share.

So much for investing in blue chip companies

yea, both games between the Czechs and Netherlands were some of the best all around team football matches from both sides in a match i have ever seen from international football. in Euro00 you are right with the 1-0. but in Euro04, the Netherlands put on a show in the first half hour and were up 2-0, but Czechs fought back and won 3-2 before the 90 mins were up.

I remember the ridiculous goal nedved scored.

Euro2000 by the way was an anomaly to modern tournaments. Every 2nd game was like that 2004 match you're talking about.

true story, i absolutely loved the football between 1998-2006. nedved was easily my favorite player ever. he could score absolute howlers with either foot

... see the thing about czech republic is i feel their best sides were from mid 90s to mid 00s and they are in a bit of a rebuilding time looking for that next "golden" generation... problem is i think it will still be a few years. as for holland, for decades they just continue shooting out new great generation after generation. i don't know how they do it, but i love it

btw... putting political reasons and history aside, am i the only one that would love to see Yugoslavia put back together simply for footballing terms? they'd be a super power every year

in international tournaments? Well like I said....2000 was a throwback to decades prior. Remember spain slovenia?

    2002 sucked, 1998 sucked, 2004 sucked, 2006 sucked....picture? :p

Club football was more interesting though in early part of that period.

that'd be amazing, I wish they could do it. For basketball too

I've been a germany supporter since 1990 (when bayerngirl was NOT bored due to her not being alive yet...), get your facts right dude! :p

I noticed the commercialism and the result oriented nature of the games more, and it lost the joie de vivre that older games used to convey.

besides euro 2000, when everyone played like there was no tomorrow (or commercial endorsements to sign and pose with :p)

I'm seeing the same football so far. Nothing changes in the style or the way teams are playing.
