I am curious who here has been affected by globalization? I knew somebody who lost his job to a foreigner a few days ago. www.globalizationforever.blogspot.com
John McCain says there's nothing that can be done about it. My suggestion if he's elected: Heavy drinking.
If you did, you'd learn a hell of a lot about what bullsh!t you were taught in economics from these so-called economic geniuses who say all free trade is good no matter what the consequences. Like rock beats scissors, experience in the real world beats school.
We're both lucky. With the falling $ foreigners will buy more from us (good for you) and stay out of this country (good for me).
Well, I won't say globalization is awesome, but power to the global economy. It keeps the price of my food and clothing down. It means I can buy reasonable looking furnature on the cheap. Now, if only some of those counties who are really benefiting from globalization would make better environmental policy, then globalization would be awesome.
No kidding. In the past week, I've eaten sushi, watched an Algerian movie and a few soccer matches, and my house is now worth a little bit more money because my HOA was able to make some improvements to the common areas with cheap day labor--immigrants, I believe.
You make my point that we're a consuming, and not making, economy. You're not adding anything to the economy that post of yours, you're just taking.
That is under the view that we all work in factories (or such) and everybody produces something. But the global economy has changed that. We, in the US and Western Europe, are becoming more managers and administrators. How many CEOs actually produce something?
Yeah for now, but you have to understand the trend. Eventually the managers and CEOs are going to get cut. It works like this-first, the low-level work gets done overseas. The low-level work has to be managed by Americans because it's the first time. But then, once the workers get used to what they're doing, there's NO REASON why they need American CEOs and managers anymore. They can recruit from the lower level workers and locally. They now have the expertise, know-how. That's why, for example, at first in Info Tech outsourcing went to cheap labor. Now, the places where the cheap labor is, are suddenly booming. New companies, new managers, no need for the US anymore. For example, car parts are made in Mexico. At first, you need the US to manage the factory. Eventually though, it can all be done in Mexico. Absolutely no need for the US, we just import.
Maybe this guy 1. Was inept for his job or, at the very least, did a worse job then the foreigner would or 2. Was asking for a bigger salary then his job required. If that was the case a salary cut wouldn't have got him fired.
No, I'm making the point that globalization has made all kinds of things available to me which weren't available to my parents. It was a bit of a silly comment, but so was the original complaint IMHO.
IMO New Zealanders must be some of the most "globalised' people in the world A bunch of expat english and scots, we nearly killed off our pesky indigenous types, then 25% of the population decided not to live in New Zealand - preferring to go on the dole in Australia, or cheat lazy poms out of jobs Meanwhile our country has been overrun by filthy asians with their asian crime and bad driving
