Ok.. here goes. I started to work on this last fall just because it seemed like a fun idea. I have a blog up for it, UMLSCC. It's also in my signature. What I did was take the first winner of the first ever MLS game, San Jose defeating DC United. After that San Jose was the Unofficial Club Champion. I have ignored Overtime, Shootouts, Playoffs and USOC games involving MLS teams. A 90 minute draw means a team retains the title. Looking at the site you will see that 308 games have been played and the current Champion is ... Kansas City. KC is UMLSCC for the 7th time, which is actually tied for the fewest title reigns (Not counting RSL/Chivas who are at 0). Anyway, I was thinking of posting this over in FCD board, since Dallas is the next challenger, and then on MLS N&A. I understand that some other user... scaryice? ... has/had some kind of "ladder" structure there before. Maybe this will be more interesting
What is the tally of clubs and how many time's they've been champion? Which club has the longest "reign"? I'd like to see that.
LOL that's funny, he showed me this stuff yesterday and those were the first questions I asked too. He's working on it.
I plan on crunching a bunch of data for this and putting things into different entries. And bringing up facts each time a UMLSCC game is played. There are a few of those the KC vs FCD story on the blog. Longest title reign is Los Angeles. After winning they had 12 defenses before losing to Chicago. Nine is the next longest defense shared by multiple teams. # of Title Reigns 13 MetroStars(Red Bull NY) and Chicago 12 Houston/San Jose 10 Los Angeles 9 DC United, Columbus and FC Dallas 7 New England, Colorado and Kansas City(*) 5 Tampa Bay (x) and Miami (x) *=current champ, x=contracted
Wow. Thats crazy, I never even thought about doing something like that. Have you ever though about adding up the amount of games a certain club was champion?
Yep... working on that My guess, at a glance, is that it's Chicago, LA or Metros. Both Chicago and Metros champs 13 times but LA had several long streaks (so did chicago). I'll post more later. Still trying to decide if I want to get hit with a tidal wave of negativity by posting in N&A...
I explained that ... just like in wrestling, I vacated the title. Let's hope there's no more retraction ever in the MLS. Thought about doing to San Houston Dynamoquake but since they are the same team really I didn't.
Ignoring USOC, Playoffs, etc... doesn't seem like a problem. However, ignoring Shootouts and Overtimes - to me - is. Those were the "rules" by which the games were played at the time.
Yeah, I thought about that and actually worked it out. On July 10th, 2004, DC United lost 0-1 at KC and the counting of "overtime and shootout" actually merged up. DC went into the game representing the champion that just counted draws KC went into the game representing the champion that counted OT/SO. I understand your argument about using those SO/OT results. But since I did it "retrospectively" I thought it made more sense to not count them.. well, ok, to me it made sense. Eitherway, KC is the current champion
Was gonna post it last night until I found an error in number of champions. Fixed that and decided I needed to walk through it all again, so it's now all entered into a spreadsheet in such a way that I can pull some statistics. So I may post it today when some stuff slows down at work.
