Liga Mexicana TRIPLEHEADER on Saturday April 7

    5pm ET - Pre-game

5:55pm ET - Monterrey vs Tigres (El Clásico del Norte)

7:55pm ET - Santos vs Estudiantes Tecos

9:55pm ET (15-minute delay) - San Luis vs Jaguares

    ============

The network will take La Jugada from Televisa as its nightly Mexican soccer talk show from Mexico City. La Jugada will compete head-to-head against La Ultima Palabra on FOX Deportes and Futbol Picante on ESPN Deportes.

There will be a nightly sports news program. The executive in charge of sports news, Sharon van Zwieten, was hired by Univision from ESPN STAR Sports (ESS) in Singapore (van Zwieten was a producer at CNN before she did her stint with ESS, where she launched and subsequently shut down SportsCenter Malaysia on ESPN Malaysia.)

    ==============

Let's see what happens on Saturday April 14, when Univision will have to deal with 2 matches simultaneously at 6pm and 10pm ET.

The tripleheader on Univision Deportes Network will be Club America vs Santos, Pachuca vs Monarcas, and Atlante vs Pumas.

Will Univision Deportes Dos be activated exclusively on DISH Network to handle the two overflow matches: Queretaro vs San Luis at 6pm ET and Atlas vs Monterrey at 9:45pm ET?

Is it just Deportes Dos that is a Dish Network exclusive, or is the main Deportes channel going to be a Dish exclusive for now also?

Univision Deportes DOS is exclusive to DISH Network by contract through December 31, 2012. DOS is an overflow channel.

Univision can sign deals with other pay TV operators to carry Univision Deportes.

Any indication if Univision Deportes will be available OTA digitally alongside the main channel?

    No chance.

Univision reportedly wants $1/month from each subscriber for Univision Deportes Network, and Univision reportedly wants Univision Deportes Network to be placed in ENGLISH-language expanded basic tiers (alongside Galavision) in order to reach "full distribution" (over 70 million households.)

There is way too much money involved:

    70 million households x $1/month/household x 12 months/year = $840 million/year in subscriber fees

(Comparison: GOLTV U.S. earns $23 million/year in subscriber fees; ESPN Deportes U.S. earns only $11 million/year.)

    That's a shame but understandable...

For DirecTV viewers in major market areas, I strongly recommend the AM21 TV Tuner. It will integrate your HD21/22/23 DirecTV HD/DVR receivers with your OTA (Over-The -Air) antenna ie add all local channels to your programming guide. Nice way to receive Galavision in HD and tons of other channels depending on your TV market. The unit is available for about $50 and well worth the money.

You meant TELEMUNDO HD, which will NOT be available via DIRECTV until World Cup 2018.

Galavision is a pay channel and is now 100% in Spanish, but is placed in ENGLISH-language expanded basic tiers because of Univision's clout. Galavision will probably not be available in HD via DIRECTV for the forseeable future now that Galavision will be used more and more as a dumping ground for stuff that don't fit on the other channels, such as news programs from Televisa's Canal 4 in Mexico City, and MLS matches.

Just to get this straight, Univision Deportes will NOT be an over-the-air channel on free tv available on a sub channel like 41.2 or 41.3? Its just gonna be available on pay tv correct?

Correct. Univision Deportes Network and Univision Deportes Dos will be pay TV only.

True. There was never a need for them to get satellite or cable because all the games were televised on free tv. Viewership should go down I imagine because of it.

I think most current viewers will just get by with watching Azteca America for their Mexican League soccer fix instead of signing up for cable/satellite to get Univision Deportes. Azteca America is OTA and currently still has Mexican League TV rights. They usually have a game on Saturday night and then one on Sunday around lunchtime each weekend.

Telemundo will still have Chivas Guadalajara home matches through May 2013.

Remember that most Mexican migrant workers in the U.S. (who are NOT from the Mexico City area) who watch futbol on free-to-air TV support Chivas and absolutely HATE Club America (and its parent company Televisa.)

[Even in Mexico itself, 40% of sports fans support Chivas, and roughly 40% of sports fans hate Club America.]

That is good news for Azteca.

And around here, Azteca is still an analog channel, meaning you can tune in with your coat hanger and 1987 CRT TV with no issues. No digital, no problem, you dont need a converter box or fancy new box.

I do think this is a bad news for Univision though. Theyve been growing a lot, but a huge part of it comes from the sports.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

Univision is taking something that it had been giving away for free to monitize it through SUBSCRIBER FEES, especially from English-speaking TV households who don't watch the Univision Networks.

Univision wants to charge $1/subscriber/month for Univision Deportes Network and Univision wants to place Univision Deportes Network on ENGLISH-LANGUAGE expanded basic cable tiers, right alongside Galavision.

That means over 70 million TV households by the time Univision Deportes Network achieve "full distribution":

    70 millon households x $1/month/household x 12 months/year = $840 million/year in projected subscriber fees for Univision Deportes Network.

Compared that to $106 million/year for FOX Soccer, $54 million/year for FOX Deportes, $23 million/year for GOLTV, and $11 million/year for ESPN Deportes, and you can see why:

    1. Univision wants to buy soccer rights from Europe, including La Liga (which it lost to Al Jazeera) and English Premier League (because Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez has a 5-year contract with Manchester United.)

(Univision has cash set aside if FOX Sports Media Group and ESPN, Inc. were to need assistance in fending off Al Jazeera for the U.S. rights to the English Premier League. Univision will likely demand "1st pick in Spanish" for all 38 rounds if Univision were to join FOX and ESPN, Inc. to form a 3-way alliance.)

I expect Univision to be a player in the upcoming auction (in August) for the U.S. media rights to the English Premier League for the 2013-2016 seasons. Both FOX Sports Media Group and ESPN, Inc. understand this.

    2. Univision will move the Saturday night Liga Mexicana matches off TeleFutura (free-to-air) to Univision Deportes Network (pay TV)

Liga Mexicana matches on Sundays will stay free-to-air on Univision for now.

If Univision gets a deal with Comcast close to or after launch, Univision will be making serious money..

There is no such thing as free tv. The old model was to broadcast a program and have advertisers pay for it. In return the Advertiser will get brand recognition and sell more products. Now, programming cost is high and broadcasters want to still collect ad revenue and sub revenue as well, but nothing is free. Now, when you take a product for OTA to PAY TV, you will loss some eyeballs, but you will get sub revenue hence the ad rate card will go down, and over a period of time that rate card and sub revenue will go up at a decent rate and you are making more money in the end.

    But nothing is free.

Just like I had thought UDN will be airing a strong core of its International affiliate Televisa Deportes Network's programming..
