No one knows where those quotes came from, it seems. It appears there was a game of telephone at some point.
I do find it interesting that Jones' Twitter background and profile pics are of him in US uniforms, not Schalke.
Yup, they were directly quoting Jones in the piece. To me it seems like Jones- after being cut from the Basel squad for one game (Something that is directly confirmed by Horst Heldt)- decided to throw a little tantrum ("If you're not playing me, I'll take a six week time- out") and then decided to rather make a U- turn when he realised that missing six weeks at this point in his career might not be wise. On the other hand, if he really is playing with a niggling injury, it would explain his up- and- down form, and it might be wiser to get an operation now rather than carry it.
Reports from this morning indicated that no one knows where that Jones quote came from. It appears to have materialized out of thin air. No one spoke up and claimed it, so the assumption now is that Jones never said it.
Well either Bild made some shit up, or they got the story right and Schalke/Jones are backtracking based on the reaction. I guess it doesn't really matter.
It's pretty simple. If Bild can't figure out where that quote came from now, why did they use it in the first place?
The more interesting thing is that whatever happened, it seems to have been decided and communicated by Heldt right over Kellers head. As a coach, that is not exactly a vote of confidence.
FWIW, Honigstein on the Guardian goes with the "Jones/Schalke had a change of mind" theory: http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2013/sep/30/schalke-hoffenheim-bundesliga-roundup
From the article: ...I'll say. Some one needs to tell Heldt that if you don't give the media the truth (or at least a good believable story) they'll just speculate away.
This is almost funny. The fan boards are almost inconsolable right now. The thread about Jones' suspension is approaching 1000 posts in 24 hours. http://www.schalker-block5.de/index...24&s=a8bc2610f5d804c818bd09ec316f791340c44f62 Heldt came out and claimed the "pause" was for "sporting reasons," but the fans aren't buying it. Jones' play has been trending up, and outside the two mistakes in the second half, he was arguably the second or third best player on the pitch against Hoffenheim. The "real" reason might be some sort of incident at a team meating, but the fan boards (which generally have a pretty good pulse on the team) seem to think this is a move to protect Keller. I agree with them, mostly because Heldt has done this before, specifically with Magath. EDIT: The word being used here is "ein Bauernopfer," which is a pawn, as in sacrificing a pawn in chess (if my understanding is correct).
Jokes aside, I bet Jones will be with Schalke longer than Keller. The more I hear about this issue, the more I agree with most of the fans on Schalke-Block5 that this whole thing was an attempt to deflect peoples criticism and attention away from the disastrous job Keller is doing.
Where in the world did you get this idea from? He's been no worse than Hoeger or Neustaedter, and he's still our best option at CM. Keller would be an idiot to just bench him.
not in the team's lineup today in austria.. not on bench either FC Schalke 04 Hildebrand, Uchida, Höwedes, Santana, Aogo, Höger, Neustädter, Farfan, Meyer, Draxler, Boateng
