Time to recalculate the "normalized" scores for nations and clubs. Again, since the format changes next season, it is difficult (and from a statistics standpoint, invalid) to compare / add seasons if the possible raw score can differ (which would happen starting next season). The way to do this in statistics (referring to the branch of mathematics) is to normalize the raw scores to a number from 0.0 to 1.0, then you can add the results together, so no year gets more weight than another. For each nation/club in each year, the normal score is (RAW_SCORE - MIN_ACTUAL_FOR_ALL_SCORES) / (MAX_ACTUAL_FOR_ALL_SCORES - MIN_ACTUAL_FOR_ALL_SCORES) ...so the highest raw score in each year gets normalized to 1.0, and the lowest raw score (which in this case was always 0) gets normalized to... um... 0.0 Someone else suggested that instead of using the acutal max score acheived, to use the theoretical maximum possible score, but I didn't calculate it like that. I kept the same order as in the raw scores, without re-sorting. There are no changes in the order for the nations, and a few in the clubs (Marathon moves over Toluca; Puerto Rico over Saprissa; Atlante over Pachuca; Olimpia over Columbus; Seattle over Salt Lake; Montreal over Comunicaciones; Los Angeles over Municipal; Alajuelense over D. C. United; L.A. Firpo over Joe Public; and Herediano over W Connection). Also, to clarify how this is going to work for this year's CCL, I'm going to be using the point structure I laid out in March: - No group stage bonus - Each match is worth 3 points (draw = 1.5 each) - Advancement from group earns 2 bonus points - Advancement from quarterfinal to semifinal, or semifinal to final, earns 1 bonus point - CCL champion earns 2 bonus points This should keep the numbers pretty consistent without any need for a major statistical adjustment.
I don't know if you care, but when UEFA changed the Champions League qualifying format and changed the UEFA Cup to the Europa League, the sum of the country coefficients for every country for the season increased significantly: 2006-2007: 197.825 2007-2008: 199.780 2008-2009: 196.602 2009-2010 (first season of new format): 232.923 2010-2011: 234.755
So I decided that, to better reflect the UEFA-style calculations of this, clubs who either did not participate in a given CCL or in the group stages would still receive 1/3 of their federation's overall score for that campaign. This also places a greater emphasis on how a club performs in the CCL, rather than having that club rise up the list based simply on how often they participate (for example, the changes push Monterrey way ahead of Pumas). Additionally, it better predicts how a club will perform based on their country's history, so if the numbers were used (hypothetically, of course), to conduct a draw, such a draw would be competitively balanced. This change caused a lot of shifts in the overall club coefficient listing, which are too numerous to list. Throughout the club coefficient list, you will also see the different federations. These indicate where a club from that federation that has not yet participated in the CCL would enter the list upon future group stage qualification. On to the rankings... You have the top Mexican club with a coefficient 2.91 times higher than the minimum for Mexico. In UEFA for the five seasons ending 2011-2012, Manchester United is the top English club and has a coefficient 8.40 times higher than the minimum for England, the top country in UEFA. The difference between 2.91 to 8.40 shows how dominant Mexico has been in CONCACAF compared to any league in UEFA.
Given the change in format, I'm not sure the UEFA-style coefficients are still meaningful after each match day--since every group has a bye every match day, they won't normalize until the end of group play. For example, Canada got 3 out of 3 available points this week; Mexico got 1.5 out of 1.5. This will probably throw the early rounds out of whack a little.

It's a "league table" built on the average results whenever a team from Country A plays a team from Country B, counting the CFU as a single country. All of these scores are averaged to give the team an average points per opponent, between 0 and 3. Typo? What clubs? Oh I see it, I assume something got screwed up with the Formula. Example, Chorrillo and Guadalajara (which one?)
No mistake, if I understand correctly: I assume this also means that clubs who win zero games in a given tournament will still earn points if teams from their country do earn points.
SiberianThunderT is on point. I decided to alter the formula as noted in the post he quoted. It changes things up a bit, but I believe it gives a more accurate reflection of a club's standing in CONCACAF.

I also have a question, I assume Guadalajara is Chivas since no other team from that city has played in the CCL, but Los Angeles, I assume is the Galaxy, but didn't Chivas USA play in the first CCL pre-lims? Since they probably got not points I assume that is why they are not on the spreadsheet?
Numerous examples - Chivas is one, but also - all of the MLS clubs. I don't think any MLS club has played in every CCL tournament.
Thanks for clarifying this. So as I understand it, these rankings reflect each club's standing or ranking within CONCACAF, and not on their actual performances in the CCL. I understand why the calculations are different this year. However, Chivas has played one game ever in CCL and ... have 28 points. I miss the old calculations that showed how teams actually performed. The old calcs had issues as well, but I liked the summary of teams' actual performances - over the expected rankings.

Both styles have their shortcomings, but I actually think this provides a better indication of how teams have actually performed when they've been in the Champions League. The old style rewarded teams more for simply making it - it's hard for me to argue that, for example, Marathon (37.1389 old score, 38.6945 new score) has been better in the CCL than Atlante (25.5000 old score, 47.8333 new score), when Marathon has never made it past the quarterfinals and Atlante has won the tournament. Yes, Marathon has certainly had a much better record of qualifying, but that comes down to being a big fish in a much smaller pond. Likewise with Santos (69.125 old score, 76.8333 new score), with one final and two semifinal appearances being better than two-time champion Monterrey (64.6250 old score, 78.8333 new score). Again, yes, more qualifications, but once there, not better performances. That's just my opinion though, there are certainly merits and downsides to both systems. Oh, also of note, over the past couple of weeks I removed clubs from the club coefficient list who are not in this year's edition, and who also scored zero points on their own merit from their previous appearances. With the "First-time qualifier" score, these clubs (San Juan Jabloteh and Motagua) became redundant in the rankings. If clubs who have zero overall CCL points to their own credit, and who are also playing in this year's tournament, fail to gain any points, they will also be removed at the conclusion of their campaign. This includes Real Esteli, Aguila, and Chorrillo.
I do see your point. Its just seeing teams like Chivas (they've played exactly 2 CCL games, and haven't exactly torn it up) or even Columbus so high in the standings. But I'm just nit-picking; I really appreciate it that you post these standing after each round.
