Olympiastadion Berlin

The Olympiastadion Berlin is the home stadium of Hertha BSC Berlin and also the place for the final of the DFB Pokal, the German cup. It also hosted the 2006 World Cup and 1974 World Cup. It holds 74.228 spectators, making it the 2nd biggest stadium in Germany, behind Borussia Dortmund's Signal Iduna Park.

History

The Olympiastadion was built for the 1936 olympics which were to be held in Germany that year. It was built from 1934-1936 according to plans from architect Werner March. Originally, the Olympiastdion held 100.000 spectators. It is part of a great sports complex alongside Maifeld and Waldbühne etc.

Matches for the 1974 World Cup were played in the Olympiastadion after it had been equipped with a roof.

During the years 2000-2004 construction on the stadium began in preparation for Germany's world cup in 2006. The stadium was modernized and reconstructed. It has received a 5-star rating by UEFA.
