A category is a grouping of related articles that the wiki software automatically lists on a special category page.

Category pages

A category page consists of three parts:

 • The editable text, which is like any other page.
 • An alphabetized list of subcategories.
 • A alphabetized list of articles.

Note: Category pages exist only in the category namespace.

Placing an article in a category

To add an article (or other page) to a category, you edit the article, not the category page. An article is placed in a category by adding a special category tag (a kind of reverse link) to the article itself.

The category tag takes the form:

Notes:

 • If an article contains one or more category tags, links to the categories will be displayed in a special box at the bottom of the page.
 • An article can be placed in more than one category by adding more than one category tag.
 • Category tags should be placed at the end of an article to avoid undesirable text display side effects.

Sort key

A sort key other than the article title can be specified in a category tag. The sort key follows the category name and is separated from it by a pipe ("|"), as shown below:

For example, to add an article called Albert Einstein to the category "people" and have the article sorted by "Einstein, Albert", the category tag would be: "". Adding a sort key does not change how the article title is displayed on the category page; it merely changes how the article is sorted.

Usually, all articles of the same type in a category should be sorted by the same key. For example, all the names of people in a given category should either be sorted by last name or by first name.

Notes:

 • Sort keys are case sensitive.
 • Spaces are significant.
"A  Z" (with two spaces) comes before "A A" (with one space).
 • An underscore in a sort key is not the same as a blank space (although, in an article title, an underscore and a blank space are the same).

Creating a category page

It is possible to add an article to a category that has no category page. While a category tag creates a category, it doesn't create a category page. A category page only exists if there is some text in the editable part. You can create a category page by following a link to it (from the bottom of a article in that category) and adding some text to the page. Any text will do (if you can't think of anything better, you could simply use the name of the category).

Linking to a category

It is possible to link to a category from another page without adding the page to the category. The link takes the same form as a category tag except that there needs to be a colon (":") before the word Category, like this:

:Category:NameOfCategory

Subcategories

You make a category a subcategory of another in the same way that you add an article to a category: by adding a category tag.

To make a category a subcategory of another, simply add a category tag to the bottom of the editable text.

Moving a category page

The only way to move a category page is to manually change all category tags that link to the category, and copy the editable part. There is no automatic way to move a category page. The editable part of a category page can be moved but that won't move the subcategories and articles in the category.

Placing a template in a category

To categorize a template without categorizing pages that call it, you have to enclose the category tag in <noinclude> and </noinclude> tags.

Categorization

Guidelines for creating and naming categories may vary. Typically, in a well-indexed project, most articles should eventually be placed in at least one category. And most categories (except one top-level category) should be a sub-category of at least one higher level category. If you are unsure, check for spcific guidelines in a project before creating categories and making categories subcategories of others.

Category titles

It is not obvious whether a page on Amsterdam should be in category City or Cities. A convention for using one or the other is useful in order to avoid ending up with both.
