EurosnobFrom BigSoccer WikiEurosnob (Eurosnobism, Eurosnobist) In football (soccer) circles, a Eurosnob refers to a person from outside of Europe who professes a great love of European football, or a particular European club or league (though not necessarily possessing significant knowledge of said league/club), while holding in disdain the sport in other parts of the world. In particular, Eurosnobs always look down upon their home country's domestic league, despite lacking in significant knowledge of that league. In the European context, a Eurosnob is someone from a country outside of the traditional football (soccer) powers, who holds eurosnobist beliefs vis a vis his or her home country's leagues and clubs and those of the traditional European football (soccer) powers. Eurosnobs are typically reviled by their country's non-Eurosnobist fans, who are dedicated to their domestic game. This is because Eurosnobs are seen as a hinderance to the sport's domestic development. The hostility felt among fans of a country's domestic game towards Eursnobism often results in a backlash, in which even non-Eurosnobs can be seen as insuffuciently pure in their dedication to the domestic game for simply expressing an admiration for any aspects of the game played outside one's borders. Among local fans of the traditional soccer powers, practitioners of Eurosnobism are typically looked down upon as insincere and phoney, latching onto their club or league for the sake of fashion rather than passion. Eurosnobs are often confused with other fans of European football (soccer). Immigrants following the league and/or club of their birth are typically genuine fans of the given league/club and therefore not likely to be Eurosnobs. Furthermore, it is possible to be genuinely more entertained by a foreign league/club than one's domestic alternatives without being a Eurosnob. In order to be a Eurosnob one must follow a foreign league/club in order to cultivate a "European" image for oneself, and as such be inspired primarily by fashion and one's own image, rather than the genuine passionate interest charateristic of real football (soccer) fans. Furthermore, in order to qualify as a Eurosnob one must be generally ignorant of, yet disdainful towards, their country's domestic football (soccer) competition. |
