D.C. United Supporters Abroad

From BigSoccer Wiki

DC United enjoys considerable support from beyond the Beltway. Some of this stems from the team's strong regional support which extends from Georgia all the way up to Philadelphia, and some of this stems from the fact that Washington, DC is a place where a lot of people spend a few years and then move on. This page will serve as an information resource for those United fans in diaspora. At a minimum this will include information for supporters attending United away games and information about gathering spots across the country where United supporters have been known to meet up to watch games on TV.

Alabama

  • Huntsville: Home to Redstone Arsenal and Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville is also the home to several thousand former Washingtonians due to the BRAC Base Relocations and other transfers. There is no organized supporters group, but trips to Columbus, the closest MLS city, are currently in the works for at least one former Screaming Eagle. PM Ryano if you are interested in going along or getting together to watch DCU on the tube.

California

  • Northern:
  • Southern: Between Los Angeles and San Diego there are probably a good two dozen DC United supporters in this area. Getting them to games isn't always easy but group ticket purchases are almost always attempted.
    • Los Angeles Galaxy (Home Depot Center): The Galaxy has not always been fully cooperative in helping to organize group purchases. That has begun to change in recent years and they've recently been much more willing to set aside a block of tickets and allow DC United fans to make individual purchases within that block. Usually the effort is led by one of a couple posters on BigSoccer (see the Supporters Abroard board) and tickets can be purchased by contacting the Galaxy directly. The preferred seating location is the corner behind away bench in section 115 or 116. Those sections are far away from the Galaxy supporters groups and give the DC United fans a good opportunity to interact with the United players. DC United supporters meet up before the game in Lot 4a (map).
    • Chivas USA (Home Depot Center): Chivas has generally been easier to deal with than the Galaxy when it comes to arranging for a block of tickets. Again, the effort is usually led by someone on BigSoccer (see the Supporters Abroard board) and tickets can be purchased by contacting Chivas USA directly. The preferred sections for these games are 136, 137 and 138. DC United supporters meet up before the game in Lot 4a (map).

Georgia

  • Savannah:

Illinois

  • Chicago:

Ohio

  • Columbus:

Maryland

  • Annapolis:
  • Baltimore: There is a sizable contingent of supporters who make the short trip to RFK for every game. Baltimore Supporters are members of the three major supporters clubs (Barra Brava, La Norte, Screaming Eagles), and others travel independently. For the past two years, a pre-season Happy Hour has served to allow United fans in Baltimore to meet eachother in Charm City.
    • Soccer Friendly Bars
      • Slainte [1]
      • James Joyce Pub [2]
      • Claddagh Pub [3]
  • Frederick:

Massachusetts

  • Boston (New England Revolution): The supporters groups reliably organize away sections for these games.

New York/New Jersey

  • Giants Stadium (Red Bulls): The supporters groups reliably organize away sections for these games. You can get to it on gameday with the Giants stadium bus from Penn Station.
  • New York City:
    • Manchester Pub (manhattan) 49th and 2nd Ave. Shows soccer, will show DC or any MLS game if it's on and the tv's aren't taken up.
    • Nevada Smith's (manhattan) 11th and 3rd Ave. Shows only soccer (and occasionally tri-nations/six nations rugby). Will show any MLS game. Warning, may have Red Bull idiots in there.

South Carolina

  • Charleston (Blackbaud Stadium, Charleston Battery):

Texas

  • Houston:
  • Dallas:

Utah

  • Salt Lake City:

Virginia

  • Richmond:

Supporters: There have always been DCU fans down in Richmond but 2007 is the first year a true effort has been made to get organized. Active carpools are being formed and an email list is being maintained to help communication. The goal is to bring the diverse fans Screaming Eagles, Barra Brava, and quiet siders together to make it easier to get up to games and have larger gatherings at PennyLane for away games. Check on Lot 8/Supporters Abroad for Richmond happenings and carpool information.

Soccer Friendly Bars: Penny Lane (www.pennylanepub.com) is located downtown (421 E. Franklin) and is soccer friendly. As the name implies they lean towards EPL and support Liverpool. The owner (Terry) is often around and avid supporter of soccer, opening early for World Cup games and downstairs has a growing collection of scarves. They are always willing to show DCU. Food is what you would expect for a British pub as is the beer selection. This is also the after game locale for Richmond Kicker fans after their games.

Banditos Burrito Lounge (www.banditosburritolounge.com) at 2505 Patterson Ave. is close to Richmond Kicker stadium and is the traditional stop pre and post game for any games against the Kickers. They don’t really go out of their way to show DCU but are willing to switch a TV over to a game. Good Tex-mex style food and average beer selection.

GUS' BAR & GRILL, Located on Broad and Mulberry (across from the Science Museum), has become the number one spot for soccer viewings and DC United fans. They get most leagues from most countries, and have even ordered Direct Kick just for the Richmond VA, DC United fans. For DC United games they turn the TV volume up and the bar music down. If a game can only be accessed through the internet, Gus' even has a TV dedicated to getting it. The management has done everything in it's power to get all DC United games. The food is good and is geared more towards dining then pub grub. They are open for business every day, from noon until 2:00 am.

  • Charlottesville

Soccer Friendly Bars: O'Neill's on the Corner (1505 University Ave) is the oldest Irish Pub in Charlottesville. Equiped with tremendous Satellite capabilities and over twenty TVs, they have all the channels to suit your soccer needs: Setanta, Fox Soccer Channel and Gol TV just to name a few. The staff there are kind, very soccer friendly and always show the DCU games.

Wild Wing Cafe (820 W Main St.) is a sports bar located at the Amtrak Station and has Fox Soccer Channel and Gol TV on tap. They have a large number of big screen and regular screen TVs plus some pretty good wings.

Aqui es Mexico (221 Carlton Rd) is a great Mexican/Salvadorean restaurant that has many homemade dishes plus the complete selection of Spanish language networks: Telefutura, Univision, Galavision and many more. The staff are friendly, but the restaurant is small and they only have two TVs.

Canada

  • Toronto:

France

  • Paris: At least one former DC resident and longtime supporter is currently living in Paris (PM CVF). We haven't found a place to watch MLS games live, partly thanks to the 6-hour time different to the US East Coast, but there's plenty of soccer to be had if you find yourself in the City of Light!

Mexico

  • Aguascalientes: There are many bars and restaruants to watch MLS games live in this Mexican central city. Most have Espn and Fox Sports showing on a daily basis. If you happen to be in the area, just check the local listings in espndeportes.com and foxsportsla.com and they are showing and MLS game, then you should have no trouble finding a place to watch it.

All times are GMT -5. The time now is 06:00 AM.
