United

Note: "United" is a nickname only in the sense of being short for "D.C. United". Accordingly, it is entirely incorrect to refer to DC United as "the United" in the same way that one would say "the Yankees." The word "united" is part of the official name of the club, not its nickname, in the same way that the word "state" in "Michigan State University" is part of that school's official title. Referring to DC United as "the United" is as incorrect as assuming that the nickname of the sports teams of Michigan State University must be "the State." At least one old-school Washington-area TV sports broadcaster (now retired) was never fully able to master this subtlety and delivered Saturday night highlights of "the United" [sic] for the last ten years of his distinguished career.

Stadium

Robert F. Kennedy (RFK) Memorial Stadium, Washington D.C., USA Seating = 56,000

The world-famous Bouncing Stands - One of the best "features" of RFK is the lower east seating section. Also home to La Barra Brava and Screaming Eagles, this section of seating is very flexible under the weight of thousands of jumping fans. Laid-back spectators looking to relax in their (unbroken) seats might want to avoid this section.

RFK is also the home of Major League Baseball's Washington Nationals during the 2005, 06, and 07 seasons. DC United will once again be the sole tenant when the Nationals move to their new stadium in 2008. RFK's accommodation of MLB was not exactly welcomed by United faithful. The constant changes between baseball diamond and soccer pitch led to an uneven surface and a 3-year hiatus from hosting international matches (i.e. World Cup qualifiers). The entire lower section of seating behind the North goal was removed to allow for baseball's outfield. The supporters group La Norte was forced to move and thus has a slightly more difficult time throwing toilet paper and insults at opposing keepers. Matt Reis is slightly relieved.

RFK Stadium will host its third MLS Cup in 2007.

A Soccer Specific Stadium (SSS) is planned for construction at Poplar Point along the Anacostia River with a target completion date of 2010. DC United has a proud tradition of annual stadium announcements starting as early as 1997. It is generally safe to add 2 years to the current date as the target for stadium completion.

Other stadiums: RFK North, East Rutherford, NJ, Seating = Plenty
