With the World Cup having just finished, two quick 1. FC-related notes from the tournament: Congrats to Colombia's FARYD MONDRAGÓN for becoming the oldest player to ever appear in a World Cup match! Mondragón's entrance as an 85th minute substitute against Japan made him the oldest player to have ever appeared in a World Cup match at age 43 years, 3 days. And Congrats to Lukas Podolski for helping Germany become 2014 World Cup champions!
Indeed, Welcome back Geissböcke! The one player I'm really looking forward to watching in the Bundesliga is Yannick Gerhardt. Exciting young talent, who is very committed to Köln. Good moves made so far this summer to add nice depth throughout the roster. Solid investments into promising young players and steady veterans. Additions: Defense: Tomas Kalas (on loan from Chelsea), Mergim Mavraj (from Fürth, free transfer), Dusan Svento (from RB Salzburg, 600 k), Pawel Olkowski (from Gornik Zabrze, free transfer) Midfield: Kevin Vogt (from Augsburg, 1.5 m) Forward: Simon Zoller (from Kaiserslautern, 3 m), Yuya Osako (from 1860 Munich, 1.6 m)
Testspiel TuS Koblenz 0:0 1. FC Köln Horn - Olkowski, Wimmer, Maroh, Hector - Risse, Vogt, Svento, Bigalke - Zoller, Ujah
Testspiel SSVg Velbert 0:6 1. FC Köln 0:1 Brecko (20.) 0:2 Wallenborn (22.) 0:3 Gerhardt (26.) 0:4 Finne (33.) 0:5 Peszko (56.) 0:6 Gerhardt (69.) Kessler (46. Mesenhöler)- Brecko (65. Nascimento), Mavraj, Kalas, Wallenborn - Lehmann - Matuschyk - Peszko, Gerhardt - Halfar (65. Cueto) - Finne.
Testspiel SC Fortuna Köln 1:3 1. FC Köln 1:0 Halfar (3.) 1:1 Dahmani (4.) 2:1 Halfar (25.) 3:1 Gerhardt (70.) First half lineup: Kessler - Hector, Wimmer, Kalas, Brecko - Vogt, Lehmann, Svento, Halfar, Risse – Zoller Second half lineup: Kessler - Wallenborn, Mavraj, Nascimento, Olkowski - Gerhardt, Bigalke, Peszko, Cueto, Finne - Ujah • Although the match took place at Rhein-Energie-Stadion, Fortuna were the designated home side and wore their classic red/white kit. Die Geißböcke wore their third kit of light blue/yellow. • This was the first meeting between the crosstown rivals in nine years, a friendly won 10:0 by 1. FC. • The last competitive match between the two took place in the second division on 9 April 2000 when Fortuna won 4:1 in front of 34,000 at the old Müngersdorfer Stadion.
Ahead of their arrival in Kitzbühel the club have confirmed three more friendlies: Sat 26 July away to FC Ingolstadt @ 15:30 Mon 28 July v FC Wacker Innsbruck in Kitzbühel @ 18:30 Thur 31 July v Trabzonspor in Schwaz @ 18:00
A 2. Bundesliga, a Austrian Bundesliga, and a Turkish Süper Lig team. A step up from the Regionalliga teams of the last set of friendly (btw, congrats to Fortuna for their promotion to 3. Liga). Hopefully these friendlies will give the team a good opportunity to gel prepare for the upcoming season. I know it's hard to take much away from these pre-season friendlies but can't help that they may give a slightly better picture of where the team is at than last week's games.
Eff Zeh fans at the World Cup Poldi back home Yannick Gerhardt and Lucas Cueto, two exciting young talents. Cueto is training with the pros this summer after an impressive season with the U19. A versatile attacking player who can cover both wings and centrally as AM or supporting striker.
Testspiel / Betsafe-Cup FC Ingolstadt 2:0 1. FC Köln 1:0 Groß (33.) 2:0 Hinterseer (55.) Horn - Brecko, Maroh, Wimmer, Hector - Lehmann (68. Vogt) - Olkowski (46. Risse), Gerhardt (68. Matuschyk), Halfar, Finne (46. Osako) – Zoller (68. Ujah) Booking: Wimmer (68., foul on Lex)
Testspiel 1. FC Köln 5:0 FC Wacker Innsbruck 1:0 Cueto (2.) 2:0 Osako (11.) 3:0 Ujah (31.) 4:0 Finne (75.) 5:0 Risse (78.) Kessler - Olkowski, Kalas, Mavraj, Wallenborn - Vogt (60. Gerhardt), Matuschyk - Risse, Cueto - Osako (70. Zoller), Ujah (60. Finne)
http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/...tikel_cueto-verbluefft-nicht-nur-stoeger.html Peter Stöger has been really impressed by the performances of Lucas Cueto. He scored in the 2nd min against Innsbruck on a nice link play with Risse and Olkowski. The 18 y/o talent who also recently graduated from high school, moved to Köln from Bonner SC U19 last winter break. Cueto was also leading scorer in the A-Junior BL West. Andre Wallenborn also caught the attention of coach Stöger, who has worked on his defensive play at left back. The combination of Ujah and Osaka was another positive point.
Testspiel in Schwaz 1. FC Köln 2:0 Galatasaray SK 1:0 Osako (14.) 2:0 Risse (18.) Horn - Brecko (46. Olkowski), Maroh (46. Wimmer), Mavraj (46. Kalas), Hector - Lehmann (46. Matuschyk), Gerhardt (46. Vogt) - Risse, Osako (46. Finne), Halfar - Ujah (46. Zoller). Before kickoff the club announced that Patrick Helmes had suffered cartilage damage to his left hip. No operation will be performed, out of action until further notice.
Fortunately, Köln has brought in some balanced depth in strikers this summer. Zoller, Ujah, and Osako can all provide good coverage and scoring ability. Allows coach Stöger more options for rotation and combinations up top throughout the season.
1. FC Köln 0:1 Granada CF 0:1 El-Arabi (51., 11m) 1st half: Horn – Brecko, Kalas, Mavraj, Hector – Lehmann, Vogt – Olkowski, Osako, Halfar – Zoller 2nd half: Horn – Olkowski, Maroh, Wimmer, Hector – Finne, Matuschyk, Gerhardt, Peszko – Zoller, Ujah Bookings: Babin (37.), El-Arabi (42.), Perez (53.), Finne (72.) Expulsion: Sissoko (70.)
Good luck, always had a soft spot for 1. FC Köln since I was a little kid watching the Bundesliga on PBS.

Osako and Ujah taking full advantage of two clumsy mistakes by the VfB defence, leading 0:2 at halftime. Keep it up, boys!
