Nah; but I think the way the corporation was set up is pretty byzantine; there's a long running case with Garcia's widow, for example, who apparently simply refuses to believe that the corporation owned the instruments. (There's stuff about that from long before Jerry died. Apparently the fact that Jerry Garcia or Phil Lesh played a specific instrument appreciated its value to a degree that made ownership of it by Phil or Jerry an enormous tax problem, so the corporation bought and retained ownership. The value accrued in the corporate assets and the player was paid a salary...) Anyway I imagine they can't continue to use the name without exposing Phil to liabilities that aren't realistic-- maybe even the estates of the others as well. Burbidge and Chementi aren't even listed as members of Dead and Company-- they're "withs." That is so unlike the band that it has to reflect legal tangles somehow. But the fans will recognize the real thing anyway, and they seem to be doing so. Makes an old Deadhead's heart glow to see the crowds alive once more, and staying reasonably young-- new recruits seem to be picking up on it just as always. If I understand the titles there's already at least one new thing-- not like Hunter or Barlow are apt to stop writing lyrics anyway. Even more to the point I don't see any reason they shouldn't do some of Mayer's preexisting stuff-- "Gravity" maybe or "Walt Grace"-- and surely the others have things that would fit. It has to be a living thing-- can't be a glorified oldies tour/museum piece.
Be thankful taosjohn beat me: I was going to post this guy's rendition of Charley Parker's "Yardbird Suite."
Saxophones but not jazz: it's Moon Hooch with "EWI" (and one of my recent favorite videos because I want to spread cake all over myself at a wedding someday). (or the girls dancing in the video, one of the two.) (or both.)
Doesn't really matter where we're at in the alphabet; it's the 21st of September, and this is Earth, Wind, & Fire. (So there's some Is in there!)
My buddy Cam was born on this day, and this is his favourite song. Happy Camada Day to you, good sir!
For J it's John Prall with a song called "Long Play" which has been my slightly gloomy mood, hoping to balance that with some optimism go-to. And with 47 views on this one, it's apparently just me who finds it worthwhile.
I like this. Vox like Cat Stevens and one of the Bee Gees had a baby and it sang along to... well, I can't place the music.
Elvis Presley "Hound Dog" from Tupelo, MS (1957 or so) Don't put any money on it, but I think the lady holding what looks like a picture or magazine or whatever, and the guy sitting next to her at the :49 mark - and again at the :56 mark - are his parents. It cracks me up they look like they're at a funeral. And yes, I know the song is not in sinc with his singing - it may not even be from that particular show. Still, it's worth a 1:45 look.
The Queen of Beale Street - Ruby Wilson (RIP - August 2016) A couple other Memphians help her out on this one: BB King and Rufus Thomas. The Thrill is Gone
What? More Memphis sounds.........ok. Keith Sykes 'Come as You Are Beach Bar' from new album "Songs From A Little Beach Town" More of a songwriter, really. Written for Jimmy Buffett, Jerry Jeff Walker, John Prine, The Judds, Rosanne Cash, Rodney Crowell, etc.
Helping my HS daughter with her homework this fine evening, and this campaign song from the 1840 election came up. The remake from They Might Be Giants is pretty fun; it's "Tippencanoe and Tyler Too"
Uncle Tupelo - Still Be Around from the album Still Feel Gone This song contains one of my all time favorite lines: "When morning comes twice a day or not at all." Most know this, but the breakup gave us - Wilco (Jeff Tweedy) and Son Volt (Jay Farrar)
W is for a song currently running through my head from Willie Nelson and Ray Charles, "Seven Spanish Angels." Both live and studio versions:
X is for a song from a new discovery of mine, Ted Hawkins, whose voice and performance I love. The song is "Biloxi" and it's great (followed by "Green-Eyed Girl" which is my current obsession.
