It's scary how much of my basic life philosophy has been derived from that movie. I think John Landis should form a religion.

Subbed out after 57 minutes. Not a great performance but not a bad one, either. He certainly didn't look out of place against one of the best collections of talent in the world. This was my longest look at McKennie. You can see why he makes such a good first impression as he is such a smart player. He reads the game exceptionally well, especially given his youth, and his positioning is excellent. He isn't the cleanest technically, especially compared to what was on the field today, but he more than makes up for it with smarts. He looks like a player who could eventually settle in as a deep-lying six. I'm sure Bruce Arena was watching and will be thinking about bringing him in for the next two games, though I doubt he'd play, just to familiarize him with the team because he's gonna be contending for regular minutes before too long.
Here's the link: Werder sign talented young striker Joshua Sargent https://www.werder.de/en/news/news/u23/20172018/news/sargent-signs-21092017/ “We have been keeping tabs on Joshua for a long time and so it isn’t a great surprise to us that his brilliant performances have attracted attention on an international scale. Therefore we are extremely happy that despite the numerous offers from other top clubs in Europe, he was convinced by our philosophy at SV Werder and that we can now oversee his development as a player and support him along the way. He has a great understanding of the game and he is one of the most promising talents of his age in the world,” explained Tim Steidten, the head of squad planning and scouting at Werder Bremen. From the 10th October, Joshua Sargent will take part in the U17 World Cup with the American national side in India. The striker will then start in the new year in Bremen. “Josh will have time to adapt to the club and the city and at the start, he will train with the U23s. Then from next summer, he will become a proper part of the squad,” Steidten clarified.
so a few months with the u23s at the tail end of the season then on to the first team during the summer?
Wonder what his plans are for the rest of the year. I assume U.S. Soccer plans a number of YNT camps he could join.
yeah, but Nick Taitague was in the same situation and he was at Schalke pretty much full time months before he officially signed. I think Josh will do the same.
Are we sure "a proper part of the squad" means part of the first team? It could mean from the summer on he'll be able to play games with the U23s.
Tough spot for the kid as Bayern absolutely shredded schalke in the game. Still for a 19 year old kid getting his debut he didn't look out of place, other schalke players like Bentaleb were much worse. He got subbed out for Embolo a striker/winger when schalke were down 2-0 so it was more a offense for defense change than anything against him I think
I'm not sure we should read too much into those types of statements from Bremen. He hasn't started training day-to-day with them yet, so they're unlikely to have made any definitive plans regarding his advancement. And there's only a few months between his 18th birthday and the end of the club season. I suspect that they can't register him to play (even for Bremen II) until the next season anyway. Does the signing give them any real legal protections? Could Barca sweep in with an offer he can't refuse? Just wondering.
Taitague could play after his birthday. Sargent has to wait until the next summer, its not entirely the same situation, although Sargent should be able to play for USYNT's and in friendlies. Even if he wasn't going to play any games, it does seem a little irresponsible from his agent that he did not sign with a USL/NASL team on a 1 year deal, so he could play immediately after turning 18.
Negotiations were later for this guy than with Wright or Taitague. Buzz started at a later age for him. Also, with two world cups, Sargent has had a busier schedule. Timing can always mess up these things.
The only way Taitague and Wright could have played outside of the transfer window is to sign as an amateur. So, Josh could play after his birthday and then sign a professional contract in the summer. Don't listen to fake news.
Well, Taitague played in u19 games the second he turned 18, even though that was outside of a transfer window. We agree that the rules are there, but if Nick got around them, perhaps Josh can, too.
That is the only way to get around that rule...sign as an amateur player and then sign contract in the summer...it takes 2-4 weeks to get a player pass made for a professional player but as an amateur player its automatic.
So Josh theoretically still could have signed an amateur contract with St Louis or someone else, and then he'd be fine, too, no?
no...Josh can sign an amateur contract with Werder Bremen so he can play right away and then sign a delayed professional contract during the summer...

WB's U23 team is in the 3rd league. No other reserve team is above 4th. In the lower tiers transfers are more loose. Players that are free agents can probably sign and register anytime. There were transfers into the 3.liga yesterday for instance. It is possible that Sargent signs at 18 and starts playing for the reserves along side Isiah Young. Then moves to the first team in 18/19.
