This shows how MLS academies are improving when an above average MLS academy player, who was probably just in the way of some better players who are a year or two younger, signs in Europe at a relevant team.

The one-time US U17 call-up is easily the top scorer in U17 Liga MX with 11 goals, and could try to reach 25 to 30 goals for the combined Apertura/Clausura with his current pace.— ChuckMe92 Soccer (@ChuckMe92Soccer) October 26, 2019

This is the key point with Balogun's chances to play for the USA. Once he starts getting minutes at Arsenal, he's probably not playing for the USA (or Nigeria) until 23-25. If he is required to go out on loan somewhere, others who are given a chance at a big club might leap ahead of him in the England set-up, and then maybe he'll be willing to play for the USA. One of the interesting things about this, if you like #USYNT deep cuts:Martinelli is now waaaay ahead of another 2001 on Arsenal's #9 depth chart, Folarin Balogun (7g/4a in 9 PL2 starts). Balogun has repped both the US & England at youth level, and is Nigeria-eligible as well. https://t.co/84p5N3rEnt— Matthew Doyle (@MattDoyle76) October 30, 2019 England are obviously loaded with young 9s. There's no clear path there for Balogun – nor at Arsenal now, apparently.IDK what this means long term, if anything. But he's a US-eligible player I keep a close eye on. Kid's a talent.— Matthew Doyle (@MattDoyle76) October 30, 2019
Whether he opts for the USA or not, Balogun (and just about every elite English prospect) should work a move to Germany.

I think it's a bad idea. That says nothing about his potential. I'm sure you remember back to Carter-Vickers in Olympic qualifying last cycle. Non-professional with a great reputation as a youth player, but he was absolutely dominated by Alberth Elis who had plenty of pro experience, as well. That was a big reason we didn't qualify. If Llanez was playing first team games, I think there's a better argument for making an exception. I think there's a better argument for making a case for Araujo playing up an Olympic cycle, but even then, what are the chances that any of these 01's are actually good enough to beat out the best players for a spot? Some of these players are four years older than them. This roster needs to be picked based on current ability. What are the chances that Llanez is better than someone like Lewis? Llanez clearly has better potential, but I think Lewis is clearly the better player right now.
'02 Julian Anderson scored and almost had a brace in his debut for Rangers U18. Wearing the #10, so they seem to rate him. '02 Ruben Hernandez had a hat trick today for Xolos U17. His 14 goals are easily the top mark in U17 Liga MX, and he's played fewer minutes than some of the names behind him.
I can understand the hesitancy to call in players who are playing in Mexico. Usually those players aren't good, and too many of them have gotten chances, but Hernandez and Arce are players who should be called into the '02 YNT. At minimum, they've both earned call ups.
Here's what appears to be an American-born '01 who recently moved to a lower-division Turkish club after a few years in Besiktas' academy. https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/batuhan-durmus-in-turkey.2107281/
'01 US U20 AM Marcelo Palomino is currently in Munich with Taylor Booth. He's long been a regular for YNTs of his age group but has not really had a club since leaving the Dynamo academy over a year ago.— ChuckMe92 Soccer (@ChuckMe92Soccer) November 8, 2019
