One of the poll options is "a feminist icon shouldn't have to" and my comment (I identify myself as a feminist, although, not an icon) to that is no one should have to change or not change their name. Being a feminist icon doesn't mean giving up the freedom to make a choice. There are reasons a person may wish to change their name upon marriage that have little to do with capitulating to the patriarchy. Mia stated in a post game interview that putting Garciapara on the jersey was something she'd wanted to do/been thinking about doing for sometime. If it what she wants to do, go for it. She made an active choice. At its core, feminism is about empowering women to make choices for themselves. There are different expressions and experiences of feminism. If I marry, I may decide not to take my husband's name but I may not. However, the fact that I (and Mia) have the ability to choose is the important bit.
There are a handful of people on our planet about whom if you just mention their first name - millions would know who you are referring to. Ie - Arnie, Tiger, Michael (pick the one who went to UNC) and Mia. Enough said - She was the greatest......
It was just a shout out. And I personally thought it was nice. She couldn't change her playing name, for marketing reasons, even if she had wanted too. And frankly i dont think she ever wanted to. But this was a one time thing and it was a cool thing to do. I think in her post game comments she meant it was something she had wanted to do once. Her previous comments on the matter were straight forward "no i will not change it". Nomar even said to her she shouldn't change her name. She had earned the recognition and th right to keep "Hamm". The announcement i thought was a fitting transition. Player Mia gave way to private life Mia.
Soccer can't be mixed with baseball ... maybe for a short period of time, but i hope it's not the case for Mia-Garciaparra.
newsflash- all you women out there: you have the right to keep your name whether your the most famous female athlete on the planet or not. and while nomar may be giving his blessing that mia keep her name, you can better be sure any kid of theirs won't answer to hamm.
thanks for the "newsflash" But I you're reading to much into it. I think all he meant was that It didn't bother him that she kept Hamm. And just a little cultural education for you... I'm sure he wouldn't have any problem with his kids having their mother's name. In all Latin countries you use both last names and being that his family is Mexican.... it would be no big deal.
It's really a mute point now since she won't be wearing a soccer jersy again. Probably the only jersey she'll be wearing is a Nomar jersey when we see her in the stands at Wrigley Field on ESPN or WGN.
I think you mean that the point is moot, not mute. Does anyone else think that those two are going to have some gorgeous kids? I'm thinking that their son will be the first captain of a US team to win consecutive World Cup titles and their daughter will be the first woman to start for a Major League Baseball team.
