The Football Federation of Australia has reportedly earmarked A$10 million ($8.75 million Canadian) to help the team in their World Cup and Asian Cup qualifying campaigns according to reports in the Australian media.

To put that in a Canadian context the Canadian Soccer Association's entire budget is approximately $12-13 million. The CSA budget is to cover all national team programs, operations and management.

Interesting, but I would look at how the existing money in this country is spent before adding more to the pot, otherwise it could be just more money going to waste.

Agreed as outlined in the article the current structure must change first.

For information's sake the kind of money the Australian Federation is dealing with for comparison....

They are playing with sponsorship money the CSA can only dream of below are the numbers that I can find in a quick search - I have a few friend involved at the state level in Australia and they cannot believe the state of things here.. by my accounting well past $13 million / year just on the dollar amounts we know of I'm guessing that $2.5 million per year is kind of their norm meaning another $10 million / year (not including the Fox Sports money see below) is on the table. Now obviously some of this comes in return for goods and services but... wow

all dollar figures in Aussie bucks about 87 cents Canadian today.

As for population they are just over 20 million we're just over 33...

    The money details...

Official Partner and Sporting Apparel Supplier to the Qantas Socceroos and FFA - Nike
This is a nine year deal no dollar amount but it is reported to the largest deal ever for football in Australia - so more than 10 million from Hyundai?. (Estimate $3 million + / year).

The Australian Government will provides $16 million in funding for Australian male, female and Paralympic football teams over a four year period leading to the 2010/11 season. The funding boost will carry on from the $15 million already provided to assist the Australian Soccer Association (now the FFA) over the three years leading to 2006–07. (Just over $5 million / year)

According to the Minister for Arts and Sport, Senator George Brandis, the funding, which reflects the growing popularity of the sport in Australia, will support the women's national, under 17 and under 20 teams, the men's Olympic, under 17 and under 20 teams, as well as the Paralympic Australian teams.

Official Broadcaster of the Qantas Socceroos and the FFA - Fox Sports
(thanks to BringBacktheBlizzard on the Voyageurs board) FFA's current deal, struck at a time when Fox Sports had no genuine bidding rival, is only $750,000 a year for three years. The new arrangement could see FFA earn $20m a year over a longer period.

Zurich Finanacial Services is also a major sponsor of the A-League through the FFA.

Other sample of the sponsorship money making deals they are involved with:
