If it's high school football on the am radio, I can forgive some mispronounced names, but Jesus, you'd think that if you're broadcasting a national team game nationwide, you'd take 10 minutes beforehand to get the names right.

Wolf's early substitution put his name butchering to a stop, but I counted at least 5 different pronunciations of Convey, none of which were correct. Conway was the most common, but I even heard Conroy once.

    Not professional.

Mehh, it happens all over the world.

We have this announcer in Canada (Vic Rauter, the worst sports broadcaster in history) who pronounces Roberto Carlos like Roberdo Carloshhhhhhhh.

American broadcasters can be just as bad, if not worse.

Haha... because of the possible impact on BigSoccer I watched this game actually (usually don't watch friendlies, as I said before many times) and I thought exactly the same thing... "Did he just say Bobby Convoy?????" :D

For some reason I think Bela Rethy is pretty annoying... he used to be one of my favorite commentators years ago, but for some reason he really got on my nerves yesterday. Still better than Werner Hansch, of course ;).

The sound of that man's voice makes me want to commit violent acts.

Actually, 'Convoy' was one of Rethy's closer attempts.

I've heard it that way and also more like Con-vee.

What is clear is that Conway, Convoy and Conroy are all very wrong.

Con-vee would have been my second guess actually :D.

Arent english speaking commentators actually worse at pronouncing german names? At least some comentators here try to pronounce names right while all the english speaking guys ive heard say all the names with english pronounciation and dont give a shit if thats right or not. Thats my impression at least.

Well, not the ones last night.

The BBC and Sky commentators do a pretty good job, in my opinion.

    Rethy was ok, IMO. :)
He tried to make a postive mood,
when the team had problems until the 2-0.

I prefer this to the Sat.1 or DSF guys,
who speak like the end of the world is comming,
when a player does a bad pass.

Try watching NHL games with north-american commentators. Sometimes I don't even know which players they are talking about.

I cringed when the ESPN2 commentators referred to the German league as the "Bundeshliga."

Overall they did a pretty good job though!

Funny thing is, Rethy speaks six languages :)

Good thing Germany didn't play Korea or Japan :)

American commentators who did the World Baseball Classic should be given their marching orders after how they decimated our names.

Not English, apparently. 'Josh' and 'Wolfe' are pretty basic.

I know what you mean with the "shh" sound in Portugeuse (from my limited knowledge of the language), but the way Vic Rauter said it was still a complete butchery, words can't decribe it...

I trust you. And sports commentator's aren't always the sharpest knives in the drawer.

Nein, es ist "Kahn-wie". ;-) Other than maybe Keller, Cherundulo, and Mastroeni, Convey was the only Yank that played fairly well (at times). Sadly, the match symbolized the big drop off from the US starters to the second and third team players (especially at fullback and midfield).

Not pretty, but at least some guys that formerly were considered possible US World Cup players played themselves right out of contention. In that respect, it was a success. If only more young U-20 Americans would suck it up, pursue playing in Europe, and better position themselves for South Africa... :(
