taking that first chance on the first touch would’ve been a pretty impressive bit of skill imo

Agreed, but there's still a lesson there, because the window of opportunity closes so quickly.

We had an MLS debut for FC Dallas yesterday in their 1-1 draw with LAFC.

It was just a minute, but Bryan Reynolds got on. Bryan is the 8th thread eligible player that FCD has used this season (Cannon, Pomykal, Servania, Cerrillo, Roberts, Nelson, Reynolds.............and we're assuming citizenship for Ferreira soon).

We're getting close to being able to field a team with thread eligible players that FCD has used this season. Missing centerbacks and keeper (note that they have thread eligible players in the NTSC team at those positions.)

    ---------------Ferreira-------------
    Pomykal----------------Reynolds
    ----------Cerrillo---Roberts
    --------------Servania------------
    Nelson--XX---XX-------Cannon
    --------------XX--------------------

I saw that game. Lewis was really good; Bassett also played a good game.
Alvarez and Cuello did not have much participation in the game.

If only Lewis had more skill passing the ball with a bump in his vision he would be a monster to deal with.

Bassett finally found a start after going several on the bench but he turns the ball over too often. Still very young though.

I’m highest on Vines assuming he gets back into the starting 11.

Haha I hope so. He seems like a very complete player that can get up the field well, playing combination passing, and put in decent crosses.

I’d need to see more to know if his defensive ability is a strength, but it’s not a weakness.

A discussion of whom FCD should sign to homegrown MLS/USL deals this summer. Lots of interesting tidbits in here.

    Buzz's three categories:

    High Priority Signings:
    Jonathan Gomez (LB)
    Tanner Tessmann (CM)
    Kevin Bonilla (RB/LB)

    "Investment" Signings:
    Nico Carrera (CB)
    Diego Letayf (CM)
    Beni Redzic (FW)

    "Wait and See"
    Gibran Rayo (FW)
    Johan Gomez (FW)

One might note that Buzz seems certain that Julian Hinojosa and Imanol Almaguer (two other potential signings) seem set on the NCAAs. Two of the high priority signings are fullbacks, which makes sense. That's not a position of depth within the system, especially if we're thinking of Cannon being sold this upcoming offseason. Bonilla is basically playing for NTSC full-time now anyway. Pomykal could be sold soon, so that means elevation for Roberts. Tessman (and/or David Rodriguez) move up the ladder. I personally would put Letayf in the high priority signing category as Liga MX clubs could/should be circling. Gotta lock him up if they can.

When it comes to homegrown signings, I always expect the unexpected.

It seems unlikely that most of those players would be willing to take USL League One contracts. Most of those players would be getting first team contracts at most other academies in the league.

I think Bonilla, Carrera and Rayo are signable. The rest, I doubt it, unless an MLS contract is offered.

If Pepi, AOC, Letha, and Efrain Alvarez can sign USL contracts first, so can these kids. These USL contracts for academy players basically all have the option for them to be exercised into an MLS HG contract.

You may be right at most places but FC Dallas can say to them how would you like to be next after the four we just sent to U20 WC? They didn't hold back releases of any of the three still with them. Cerrillo played his way onto the WC roster by playing at NTSC and then moving right into FCD's lineup. Doesn't hurt that another academy player moved into Schalke's starting lineup and another got bought by Bayern and seems to be in line for minutes next year (maybe a stretch but signs kind of point to it).

RBNY has done the best job of this and has bragging rights for how they sign players, move them through their system, play them and let them sign in Europe where Adams made an immediate impact.

I imagine a lot of these kids see this and want to go to the clubs that coach them up, promote them and let them move on.

I agree with you here and think this will be the next hurdle for these clubs with good prospects. Why would they sign a USL deal instead of wait for a full MLS deal? FCD has shown they will play these kids in the USL with or without a deal so the play is the same. For example, Tessman is playing fulltime on NTSC without a deal right now. Why sign a USL deal at all? Demand a MLS deal or just wait until your 18 and see what your options are? FCD won't want to let him go at 18 so they will probably give him the MLS deal. Same thing for Gomez, why sign a USL deal at 24k a year? Demand an MLS deal of over 100K. You will still get USL minutes even if you don't sign. Just wait to 18 and make FCD make a decision on you. It appears Sealy did this and got the MLS deal instead of the USL deal so FCD has shown they will give in on it.

The USL deal may be enticing to kids that really need it financially but no reason for the others to sign.

If the club allows you to play USL games without being locked into the USL deal, why not refuse the USL contract and demand an MLS deal? IF they don't sign you to an MLS deal at 15 or 16, then wait until your 18 and give them another shot at you or take the Llanez and Mendez route and head to Europe if no MLS deal on offer.

Clubs like FCD have shown you don't have to sign to play in the USL games and still be treated like a pro. Unless you need the 24 k a year, just wait and you will have more options.

If the USL contract calls for it to be turned into an MLS contract within one year, then why not sign the USL contract and get paid now?

If it automatically rolls into an MLS deal, and the pay goes from 24K to 100K, I guess that would work But why ever sign just a USL deal without the guarantee of the MLS deal when you are only 16? ( they are still going to play you in the USL and you will get the training and notoriety even if you don't' sign the USL deal.) see current FCD USL team.

No need to get locked in if the trade off is getting paid 24k now. Unless your family really needs it, then maybe.

What's stopping FCD or anyone else from offering more than $24k for their USL contracts?

Nothing and they should offer more. Make the contracts in line with MLS money and a guarantee to roll into an MLS deal and would probably make some of these more likely to sign.

Horrible attendance and an inability to connect with their fan base - in part because they play way out in Frisco. But yes - they could do it if they had the money.

Off topic but could they also get someone other than Carter Baum to do the play by play? That was almost unwatchable against LAFC last game with him and Steve Davis. The midweek game with the ESPN guys was miles better.

But agree, no one is coming out to these games and that is not going to change. In the grand scheme of things, no one cares about the FCD first team other than some keyboard warriors and National team fans looking for prospects.

Yep there’s no salary cap in the USL as far as I know. No collective bargaining agreement.
