Angking actually looks really promising. I’ll be dissapointed if he doesn’t start the last two matches considering the Revs officially got eliminated from the playoffs a few hours ago
How did Durkin play? Well enough to keep his spot for the next game? Lindley made the bench for Orlando.
He was gonna start the next game anyway because its Wednesday and DCU will still be minus some regulars on international duty. But I thought he did fine. He and Canouse really clogged up the middle and most of FC Dallas' attack came from the flanks. He was pretty tidy clearing the ball, too. Nothing spectacular but he helped his shorthanded team get a shutout against the top team in the west and win a game they absolutely needed if they wanted to pass Montreal. It's ridiculous he didn't play. And OC only used two damn subs. I mean, they were awful without him. They wouldn't have been any awfuler with him. And obviously that experience would payoff next year. So shortsighted. But there's a reason why bad teams are bad.
If he keeps his spot when Moreno returns, it creates a problem for Ramos. I can't imagine that DC will let Ramos pick their starter for a playoff game. I think its best for Durkin to be playing in that playoff game and not with the U-20's, but the U-20 side would surely benefit from Moreno regaining his place from Durkin.
I don’t see Benny benching Moreno. I can’t think of a time where Durkin started over Moreno when he was available.
I thought Cole Bassett looked pretty decent for a 17 year old making his first MLS start... postgame interview: https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2018...sett-after-first-mls-start-its-no-surprise-us "I had a couple missed passes, I could have gone a little more 1-v-1 and on the turn, and I cramped up at the end, because I haven't played a full 90 since July with the Under-23s," Bassett said with a smile. "It was pretty good overall, it was great to get a win and help the team get a result here...It was decent but I definitely have a lot to improve going into the next couple games and hopefully I can get a chance to improve with another start." Why are MLS teams with USL affiliates/teams still having so much trouble getting their top prospects a full 90 minutes?
To be fair, Bassett signed in August and has been in the Rapids’ game day 18 since he signed. They’ve had Sam Vines loaned to Charlotte all season. No idea though why they can’t have a formal partnership with Colorado Springs.
Durkin was good. It looks like he's fully adjusted to the professional game. It'd be a shame if he's not a full time starter next season as this season he looks like he's well beyond the point of getting minutes just for the sake of getting experience. Seems like fewer minutes next year, which might be likely, would be a step back.
Have to see what happens in the offseason. I have been impressed with Durkin, but competition is the name of the game. He has to beat out Canouse or Moreno for a likely starting spot.
I thought Durkin did fine in this game. Solid. He didn't really do anything to make you say "look at what Durkin just did!" No jumping off the couch. Steady. I'd say the central midfield battle in the game was a draw. And for DCU...........that was a win. Other than the one play in the box that Canouse scored on, essentially no difference between the teams. That's a win for a DCU team that looks really dangerous for the playoffs. DCU really missed Paul Arriola in this game. Their attack was really missing a spark. FCD really missed Grueso (who was on international duty). Anyway, the first game in quite some time with zero minutes for a thread eligible player for FCD. There was a brief moment when it looked like Reynolds might come on. Hollingshead had an injury, and looked like he needed to be subbed out. He hung on for some time, and when a sub came...............Pareja chose to change to a more attacking formation. Brought on a forward for Hollingshead. Its hard watching FCD and thinking they're the first place team in the West. FCD versus SKC this upcoming weekend could (should?) decide it. The West is so bad that expansion team LAFC has a legitimate shot to win the division as well. One point back. There's very little separating the top 6-7 teams in terms of quality on the field. Hottest team going into the playoffs could take it. First order of business is RSL and their youngsters fending off LAG for the 6th slot. Don't want Galaxy making the playoffs. They're a hot mess, but a hot mess that can beat anybody. I watched the NER-ORL game this weekend as well. Its shocking how putrid Orlando is. I don't really get it. Its coaching I guess. Line up Orlando's starting XI and FCD's starting XI, and it doesn't look like it should be a 32 point difference. THose are just names, though. Their "good" players have gotten old fast, and they've done little to develop their young players (both foreign and domestic). Hot mess............................ I think they're an example of what can happen if you don't have development as part of your business model like NYRB does. Every year you've just gotta either sign foreign players (or domestic veterans like Kljestan) and pray they pan out. Or somehow hope that your drafted players turn into something (which is getting rarer and rarer these days). They perhaps found a "diamond in the rough" with Chris Mueller. [He's a forward that's scored 3 goals in almost 2000 minutes. He's soon to be 23. Not a difference maker. He's Tesho Akindele.] There's no sustainable model of talent bubbling to the surface if you're paying no attention to development. No opportunity for a Reggie Cannon or an Auston Trusty to fill a hole on the roster. Its just a never-ending conveyor belt of mediocre foreign signings.
