Thought I'd get this started for the new year for the USYNT college kids, beginning with incoming freshman who have been called up to the U20, U19 or U18 teams this cycle or the U17 team the last cycle. Given that pretty much every American player in college in 2019 will be YNT-eligible, feel free to post any kids you find interesting and worthy of a post. Anyway, here we go. There are a handful of other YNT kids who have reportedly verbally committed (and have probably signed an LOI) but whose schools haven't announced the signing yet. One thing, however, that is very apparent is that fewer and fewer of the YNT kids are going the college soccer route which is, undeniably, a sign of progress. Most of the top 00s and 01s are already pros.
FCD signing night rundown: https://www.fcdallas.com/youth/chase-signing-night-2019 The U19 scademy boys are below (list doesn't include the top 2019s at FCD: Thomas Roberts, Bryan Reynolds, and Jesus Ferreira). Always a nice surprise to how many non-DA players (the premier teams, etc.) have NCAA opportunities. Anyway........... Jorge Almaguer Northern Illinois University Judson Burns Clemson Michael Collodi Colombia Julian Hinajosa UNC Kevin Kim Mercer Mark Roby South Carolina Andres Quevedo Syracuse Nathan Toledo Colombia One name jumped out at me as being missing from the list. Edwin Cerrillo had committed to Maryland. Another sign he's about to go pro? The DA site says forward Johan Gomez is a 2019. He'd committed to Portland, and I don't see him on the list. [TDS lists him as a 2020. Maybe that's right? I don't know.] But he's another one I can see signing with the USL team....................
We are thrilled to announce & welcome Hood River native, @villegasadrian2 to the @SOUMensSoccer program! An elite player in the @ussoccer_da - Adrian is a gifted & extremely creative attacking midfielder. He is a current member of @TimbersFC & former @USYNT U17 team member 🇺🇸 pic.twitter.com/qDPqWrYT6T— SOU Raiders Men’s Soccer (@SOUMensSoccer) February 18, 2019 Adrian Villegas '00 will attend Southern Oregon University (NAIA). Strange destination for a former recurring player of U17MNT.
Nice find, thanks for pointing this out. It is, indeed, an odd choice given his pedigree but he may not have had the D-I grades or expected to be a pro and may not have been NCAA eligible as a result of dealings with agents or pro clubs. That said, while it was a while ago, NAIA colleges in Oregon have some history with producing players of note. Brent Goulet led the US to the 1988 Olympics and was the US Soccer player of the year after tearing it up at Warner Pacific. Sure, the landscape has changed a tad since then, but it can still be done. Look no further than Christian Ramirez, who played at NAIA Concordia (after starting at UCSB).
Some other players who have committed: -Leonardo Sepulveda '01 (LA Galaxy) - UCLA -Will Sands '00 (NYCFC) - Georgetown -Sal Rasizzi '01 (NYCFC) - Army West Point -Alex Rando '01 (NYCFC) - Stanford -Michael Pellegrino '01 (Philadelphia Union) - Notre Dame -Blake Malone '01 (Seattle) - Tar Heels -Matthew Hoppe '01 (Barca Academy) - San Diego -Jorge Hernandez '00 (LA Galaxy) - UC Irvine -Cameron Fisher '01 (Barca Academy) - North Carolina -Victor Bezerra '00 (Chicago Fire)- Indiana
Three 2019 MLS first round draft picks were cut before the start of the season, if you were wondering how college soccer is going.— Will Parchman (@WillParchman) March 7, 2019 College soccer is going great...it’s just not a realistic avenue to becoming a professional. It’s an avenue to reduced/free tuition.— John Shields (@peppwave) March 7, 2019 Also there are plenty of kids spending only spending a year or two in college before signing homegrown deals, the draft numbers don't take them into account...
Stanford announced its incoming recruits this week, including a couple of players with YNT experience - 01 NYCFC GK Alex Rando and 01 F Gabe Segal from the same Bethesda club that produced Jeremy Ebobisse and Gedion Zelalem. "There is no doubt that our staff has attracted a phenomenal group to The Farm."Stanford signs eight. ✍️#GoStanford 🤓⚽️https://t.co/2imipd0yOi— Stanford Men’s Soccer (@StanfordMSoccer) March 4, 2019 (Granted, LOI releases always make incoming players seem like Messi, but Stanford also has a few incoming freshman who sound pretty intriguing.)
Oooof. Brandon Terwege not holding back.…………………….. I left my meeting with UCLA athletic directors telling them that in a year from now they’d remember me telling them “I told you so”... I was wrong. It was 3 months.— Brandon Terwege (@brandonterwege) March 12, 2019 UCLA men’s soccer coach Jorge Salcedo indicted in college bribery case, placed on leave https://t.co/4NFw4dX4O2 pic.twitter.com/HeWgaar5Iz— L.A. There aren't many good things you will read about Salcedo. UCLA has underachieved for years. He doesn't appear to develop talent all that well.
