Went to bed early last night. Here are yesterday's results that are relevant to this thread. Radford gets its first win, beating a pretty good West Virginia team. In a battle of winless sides, Hartford and Central Connecticut both blew a golden chance for their first W by playing to a 1-1 draw. Wake stays perfect by beating Davidson and Wright State stays undefeated with a win over Duquesne. Xavier, which had been the least-impressive undefeated team with four ties, finally buckles, falling to Notre Dame. Presbyterian stays winless, losing to Mercer. There are still nine unbeaten teams and six without a win. PERFECT, SO FAR (2) 1. Wake Forest – 9-0-0 17. Saint Mary’s – 9-0-0 UNBEATEN, BUT TIED (7) 19. Denver – 8-0-1 4. Kentucky – 6-0-1 38. Wright State – 7-0-1 13. Portland – 7-0-2 24. Michigan State – 7-0-2 70. Missouri State – 5-0-2 7. Virginia – 4-0-2 WINLESS, BUT WITH TIES (4) 205. Hartford – 0-6-4 171. Incarnate Word – 0-6-1 200. Central Connecticut – 0-6-1 189. Bryant – 0-6-1 FUTILE (2) 184. Presbyterian – 0-8-0 203. VMI – 0-8-0 TODAY 31. East Tennessee State @ Kentucky Michigan State @ 118. Penn State Saint Mary's @ 111. New Mexico
What makes it all the more frustrating is that the VMI women's soccer squad is 6-1-1 playing only Division 1 schools. At VMI male cadets outnumber female cadets 8 to 1. VMI has the smallest student population of any Division 1 school, 1700. And the women's team has to deal with all the minuses that Sandon Mibut posted earlier. Yet, somehow, they manage to win.
Kentuck (ETSU), Michigan State (Penn State) and St. Mary's (New Mexico) all stay unbeaten. Updated - PERFECT, SO FAR (2) 17. Saint Mary’s – 10-0-0 1. Wake Forest – 9-0-0 UNBEATEN, BUT TIED (7) 21. The winless list shrinks as Presbyterian beat Campbell and Bryant beat Robert Morris to get the first win for each of them. Virginia (Pittsburgh) and Portland (Northern Illinois) stayed undefeated. Central Connecticut stayed winless, losing to St. Francis-Brooklyn. PERFECT, SO FAR (2) 17. Saint Mary’s – 10-0-0 1. Wake Forest – 9-0-0 UNBEATEN, BUT TIED (7) 22. Denver – 8-0-1 4. It would be interesting if St Mary's and Portland could stay on the list until their final conference head-to-head game Nov 10.
Hartford gets its first W, beating Albany. Wake Forest (Duke), St. Mary's (UC Irvine), Wright State (Detroit Mercy) and Kentucky (South Carolina) stay undefeated. Denver (Eastern Illinois) and Missouri State (Evansville) get disappointing ties but they keep them among the unbeaten. VMI doesn't get a win but they do get their first non-loss, tying Howard. Incarnate Word stays winless, losing to Utah Valley. PERFECT, SO FAR (2) 11. Saint Mary’s – 11-0-0 1. Wake Forest – 10-0-0 UNBEATEN, BUT TIED (7) 8. Kentucky – 8-0-1 31. Wright State – 8-0-1 9. Incarnate Word – 0-8-1 205. VMI – 0-8-1 SUNDAY 73. Wisconsin @ Michigan State
There's one fewer unbeaten team as Michigan State gets upset by Wisconsin, 1-0 in OT. I'll update this with the current RPI after the rest of today's games, but here's who is left. (With their RPI as of this morning.) PERFECT, SO FAR (2) 11. Saint Mary’s – 11-0-0 1. Wake Forest – 10-0-0 UNBEATEN, BUT TIED (6) 8. Kentucky – 8-0-1 31. Wright State – 8-0-1 9. Portland – 8-0-2 29. Incarnate Word – 0-8-1 205. VMI – 0-8-1 TUESDAY Wright State @ Virginia – a battle of undefeateds Denver @ 11. Creighton 99. UNC Greensboro @ Wake Forest 155. Western Illinois @ Missouri State Regent (non-NCAA) @ VMI WEDNESDAY 2. Indiana @ Kentucky
A win with an asterisk*? Interestingly, VMI is not the worst team on the list, but it's close enough that the bottom team played that team to a draw.
In a battle of unbeaten teams, Virginia topped Wright State to keep one team on the list and take another off it. Wake Forest (UNC Greensboro), Denver (Creighton) and Missouri State (Western Illinois) also stayed unbeaten with wins. And plucky VMI got its first win over non-NCAA Regent! Yes, it's not a D-I win but I'm taking them off the list anyway. We're down to 7 unbeatens and two winless teams. PERFECT, SO FAR (2) 2. Wake Forest – 11-0-0 11. Saint Mary’s – 11-0-0 UNBEATEN, BUT TIED (5) 8. Kentucky – 8-0-1 14. Denver – 9-0-2 9. Portland – 8-0-2 3. Virginia – 6-0-2 52. Missouri State – 6-0-3 WINLESS, BUT WITH TIES (2) 202. Congrats to Denver. Creighton outshot the Pioneers 25-8, including 19-0 in the 2nd half + OT1, but the Pioneers made their shot count in OT2.
Kentucky stays unbeaten, thumping Indiana (which came into the game ranked No. 1 in the RPI) 3-0. PERFECT, SO FAR (2) 1. Wake Forest – 11-0-0 10. Saint Mary’s – 11-0-0 UNBEATEN, BUT TIED (5) 6. I did not know St Mary. Is it a usually good team? Is it a surprise to see them unbeaten? Any tips about their historical results?
It is definitely a surprise. They have the occasional good season - they had a surprise run to the NCAA quarterfinals in 2011 but that was just their second NCAA Tournament appearance this century and they haven't been back since, though they did have winning records in 2012 and 2014. But they were .500 the past two years so this is basically going against their recent form. https://smcgaels.com/documents/2018/6/6/RecordBook2017.pdf That said, if you get the right mix of experience, skill and luck, you can go on a run like this, regardless of your past record.
The undefeated list shrinks as Wake Forest falls to Syracuse and Virginia loses to Duke. Central Connecticut stays winless. I'll update the rest later. PERFECT, SO FAR (1) 10. Saint Mary’s – 11-0-0 UNBEATEN, BUT TIED (4) 6. Kentucky – 9-0-1 13. Denver – 9-0-2 9. Portland – 8-0-2 52. Missouri State – 6-0-3 WINLESS, BUT WITH TIES (2) 202. Central Connecticut – 0-8-1 173. Incarnate Word – 0-8-1
Besides the results I posted earlier, Denver stayed unbeaten win a win over Purdue-Fort Wayne and Incarnate Word lost to Houston Baptist to stay winless. Five undefeated teams and two winless teams are left. PERFECT, SO FAR (1) 10. Saint Mary’s – 11-0-0 UNBEATEN, BUT TIED (4) 5. Kentucky – 9-0-1 11. Denver – 10-0-2 9. Portland – 8-0-2 54. Bradley @ Missouri State SUNDAY Kentucky @ 149. Florida International 103. UMKC @ Incarnate Word 178. Fairleigh Dickinson @ Central Connecticut
Portland (Gonzaga) and Missouri State (Bradley) both won to stay undefeated. UP went down 2-0 in the first 10 minutes and then clawed its way back. PERFECT, SO FAR (1) 10. Saint Mary’s – 11-0-0 UNBEATEN, BUT TIED (4) 4. Kentucky – 9-0-1 13. Denver – 10-0-2 9. Portland – 9-0-2 43. Missouri State – 7-0-3 WINLESS, BUT WITH TIES (2) 200. Central Connecticut – 0-8-1 182. Incarnate Word – 0-9-1 SUNDAY St. Mary's @ 36. Pacific Kentucky @ 144. Florida International 195. UMKC @ Incarnate Word 180. Fairleigh Dickinson @ Central Connecticut
As usual, nothing to add to Sandon's info. St Mary's has an unique little stadium in the foothills on the east (and north, is it called NE bay, probably not). There is a large hill (or mini-mountain) just on the far side of the field. To get to St Mary's you need to drive up these winding country roads and you're less than 30 miles from Oakland.
Incarnate Word gets its first W, beating UMKC. No such luck for Central Connecticut, which lost to Fairleigh Dickinson.
St. Mary's thumped a good Pacific team to stay perfect. They might be the real deal. The list continues to shrink... PERFECT, SO FAR (1) 9. Saint Mary’s – 12-0-0 UNBEATEN, BUT TIED (3) 12. Denver – 10-0-2 10. Portland – 9-0-2 43. Missouri State – 7-0-3 WINLESS, BUT WITH TIES (1) 203. Central Connecticut – 0-9-1 Monday, Denver plays at 5. Virginia. Tuesday Missouri State is at 114. Tulsa. That's it till the weekend.
And then there were three. For the third time in seven days, a game involving Virginia saw an unbeaten tema fall. Tuesday, the Cavs gave Wright State its first loss and Friday Duke upset UVa to know them from the unbeaten ranks. Tonight, it was Denver that went down, and went down hard, losing to Virginia 3-0. Here's the updated list. RPIs are pending the rest of Monday's games. PERFECT, SO FAR (1) 9. Saint Mary’s – 12-0-0 UNBEATEN, BUT TIED (2) 10. Portland – 9-0-2 43. Missouri State – 7-0-3 (Interestingly, Saint Mary's and Portland are both in the West Coast conference and face each other November 10, in the last game of the regular season. Could be a fascinating game if both teams are still unbeaten.) WINLESS, BUT WITH TIES (1) 203. Central Connecticut – 0-9-1
Updated with current RPI after Monday's games. PERFECT, SO FAR (1) 9. Saint Mary’s – 12-0-0 UNBEATEN, BUT TIED (2) 10. Portland – 9-0-2 51. Missouri State – 7-0-3 WINLESS, BUT WITH TIES (1) 203. Central Connecticut – 0-9-1 TUESDAY Missouri State @ 118. Tulsa
