He's playing for Newcastle, he doesn't have to be a legend. Yedlin starts because his manager has some faith in him and knows what he brings. He's also a Yank who are notorious for not being dumb as rocks, taking direction, and working hard and improving beyond typical cutoffs for improvement years.

He's no Robinson, but it's a team game and his team is set up to not do him any favors.

?? Can you explain how the team should be set up to do him favors?

    Be forced to defend less?

Be up by a goal or two more?

Not have the 2nd worst "goals for" numbers in the EPL

    Those would all help.

That's called playing for a better team and would make it easier. Of course, it can be more difficult to be selected for the roster of a better team.

Not be on a crap relegation threatened team run by a trash owner.

I'd like to see him utilize his speed in the attacking third more.

Partly, although there are teams on NUFC's level that do score a bit - and give up more on D. NUFC is like 9-10 or so for GA. So the D holds up fairly well. A few more goals here and there would allow them to play a bit more disciplined.

It's not a huge thing, either. Good players will shine in most situations, at least relative to their surrounding players. But NUFC and DY would not be hurt by scoring a few more goals earlier in the game.

Jeebus, this Newcastle for cripes sake. You think you can ask for all that with Mike Ashley as the owner? Not bloody likely, as they would say.

So far they're at least one level above Sunderland they'll be happy.

Reminder DY is RC suspended today (I just saved you precious minutes of your life.)

Manquillo starting in the DY slot. Can he redeem himself?

Coming off red card he got stupidly his last game that hurt his team. Doesn't deserve to start.

They're playing Fulham. Probably safe to play Manquillo for this one.

Newcastle held to a scoreless draw at home to Fulham!? Not a good way to start the festive season.

Didn't see the game, but it says here that Yedlin replaced Manquillo in the 84th minute, so he's not completely in Rafa's doghouse. We'll see what happens during this transfer window.

going to pbp forum. NUFC off to poor start. Down 1-0 at the 11. Not on DY but the look uninspiring in the back at the moment.

It will be a miracle if they aren't relegated. I've honestly grown tired of Rafa's defend first in a low block tactics. If you're going to go down at least try and score a goal.

They're in relegation battle. Rafa, this week, said it would be a miracle if they stay up (he wants January enforcements).

Hard to tell from today's game. Liverpool are, for sure, in a different league. Scoring is a big problem for this team, however.

Fulham at home was more telling tbh. Today I noticed when it was still 2-0 Dabrovka had the ball at his feet in goal and waited until a Liverpool player came to close him down. Why would you do that when you're losing 2-0 in the 2nd half? It was weird. It looked they just wanted pack up shop.
