An opinion piece on the moves of Morgan & Dunn abroad:

    http://www.foxsports.com/soccer/sto...-crystal-dunn-alex-morgan-going-abroad-010317

For the NWSL, which is backed by U.S. Soccer, the loss of any USWNT players, especially high-profile goal-scorers like Morgan and Dunn, is poised to put at least some pressure on the league’s clubs. While the four-year-old NWSL is the best women’s league in the world, it has often been somewhat dependent on the star power of USWNT players, who play in the league as part of their federation contracts.

A summary of the Yanks in the W-League, via the Equalizer.

Sydney FC extends Melbourne City’s winless streak

For City, NWSL loanees Lydia Williams (Houston Dash), Laura Alleway (Orlando Pride), Steph Catley (Orlando Pride), Lauren Barnes, Beverly Yanez and Fishlock (all Seattle Reign) started the match, with Yanez subbing out in the 90th minute, and Erika Tymrak (FC Kansas City) entering at the 45 minute mark for sixteen-year-old Australian defender Tyla Jay Vlajnic.

Perth Glory 3, Melbourne Victory 2

Perth Glory defeated Melbourne Victory 3-2 on Sunday, January 8 to extend their undefeated streak to six matches. Strangely, Perth scored all of the goals, with second-half goals from Sky Blue FC’s Sam Kerr (her league-leading ninth of the season), Chicago Red Stars loanee Vanessa DiBernardo from the penalty spot (her third goal) and Rosie Sutton (her fifth of the season). Perth also scored two second-half own goals by Mexican international Arianna Romero (ex-Houston Dash) and Alyssa Mautz (Chicago Red Stars). With the win and Sydney’s tie against Melbourne City, second place Perth reduced the gap with first place Sydney FC to two points from four and the Western Australian side has a game in hand.

For Perth, Nikki Stanton (Sky Blue FC), DiBernardo, Kerr, Mautz and Romero all played the entire match. For Melbourne Victory, Natasha Dowie (Boston Breakers), goalkeeper Bianca Henninger (Houston Dash), Samantha Johnson (Chicago Red Stars) and Christine Nairn (Seattle Reign) all played 90 minutes.

Brisbane Roar 3, Western Sydney Wanderers 0

Maddy Evans (Orlando Pride) played 90 minutes for the Roar. Western Sydney’s American imports Kendall Fletcher (Seattle Reign) and Paige Nielsen (ex-Seattle Reign), along with Katie Stengel (Washington Spirit), all played 90 minutes, while Alex Arlitt (FC Kansas City) did not play.

Canberra United 2, Adelaide United 2

On Saturday, January 7, an Ashleigh Sykes brace gave Canberra a share of the points at home with draw specialists Adelaide United, who are still winless this season but have five draws in nine games, two more than any other team in the league. Sykes now has six goals on the year. Sofia Huerta (Chicago Red Stars) replied with a brace of her own—one goal from the penalty spot—and now has four goals down under.

For Canberra NWSL loanees Hayley Raso and Celeste Boureille (both Portland Thorns) started and played 90 minutes, while Canberra striker Jasmyne Spencer (Orlando Pride) played 80 minutes and Stephanie Ochs (Houston Dash) played 87 minutes. Former Australian U-17 and U-20 international Kahlia Hogg substituted in for Ochs for the final minutes. Hogg joined Canberra after a five-year gap, having played in the United States for Florida State University and the University of Colorado. Her father Steve, an Australian-international defender, played for NSL (A-League predecessor) sides in Brisbane and Canberra.

For Adelaide United, NWSL loanees Danielle Colaprico, Sofia Huerta and Katie Naughton (all three from Chicago Red Stars) played the entire match, while Monica of Brazil (Orlando Pride) was out this week to rest a hamstring.

Hoy now has six goals in her first season in Australia. The Roar’s Australian international goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold was red carded in the 82nd minute after bumping Hoy with her shoulder in the box and Australian youth international Georgina Worth came in. “I would like to win the Ballon d’Or for women. But every top professional should have that ambition. We’ve just seen the 2016 award [won last week by Morgan’s US team-mate Carli Lloyd]. Carli was up against Melanie Behringer [of Germany] and Marta [the Brazilian who previously won the award five years in a row]. They’re three of the world’s best players – but others can compete with them.”

Morgan has star-appeal and this past weekend L’Équipe ran a six-page magazine cover story on her. “That’s heartening, isn’t it,” Morgan says, “because you expose not only yourself but the sport as a whole.”

It’s still difficult for Morgan as she tries to learn French – and after just a few days she admits she is not moved far beyond “bonjour”. She is also missing her husband, Servando Carrasco, a defensive midfielder for Orlando City, and their dog Blue. “My husband found it hard as well because we are finally in the same city [Orlando] after six years of playing professionally in different cities. But I told him I need to challenge myself and evolve as a player. He ended up not only supporting me but feeling like it was necessary for me.”

    https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...all-fifa-lyon-women-equality?CMP=share_btn_tw

There's obviously a bit of confusion on both Morgan and the journalist as the BdO never included an award for women and now is no longer combined with the FIFA Men's POTY. Lloyd won the FIFA Women's Player of the Year last week.
