That's harsh ... 233 appearances. 2 MLS Cup titles and 2 US Open Cup titles. He captained the '05 championship team, although admittedly that was probably one of the poorest championship teams in MLS history. After his injuries in '07-'08 it's true he was pretty poor for the rest of his career
Perhaps a couple candidates from the 1999 Metrostars? I'm thinking Kevin Knight and Nansha Kalonji. Also, there have to be some candidates for worst on the 2001 Tampa Bay Mutiny roster (just 14 points despite having both Carlos Valderrama and a Mamadou Diallo who was still scoring goals at that point in his career) or the 2005 Chivas USA roster (especially some of the Mexican reserve team guys). Thinking back to 1996, I remember one singularly bad player who stood out among some really dire soccer. Kansas City had a winger by the name of Tommy Reasoner, whom I saw appearing as a sub in several games on Univision. He never produced anything; all he ever did was run up and down the wing like a headless chicken and repeatedly hit crosses out over the endline, and he was pretty much useless defensively too.
I once sat next to Andrew Shue at a pizza place in Hollywood. Which doesn't make him bad. Making my nominee Ali Curtis. No, wait, Martin Zuniga. But what about the ner'wa'ses like Alex Nimo, Nico Colaluca, Peri Marocevic, Steve Cronin, Greg Dalby, Gabe Ferrari, et. al.?
To be fair for Zuniga, he was injured in preseason and then re-injured his knee four games after his return. Probably never played a game while fully healthy in MLS. I still have nightmares from 2008 with Steve Cronin in goal. Worst keeper ever to get an extended run as a starter in MLS; he was so bad that Josh Wicks was a massive improvement.
You know the difference between Cronin and Wicks? Wicks still plays soccer for a living. And, even better, his club is at the top of the table too. (after two match days only, to be sure, but he is actually doing pretty well there)
I was trying to look at it in two different ways. I feel like when ever I've watched Wynn play he always makes a positional mistake that leads to a goal. I should note, from what I've seen and read he's a great guy and a good teammate. Harty was pretty bad. Nasco is a great pick. As is Tony Caig (mentioned Before). I feel like there must be some Chivas USA players that are missing out on this thread. While a starting XI is great, I feel like there is one player (at least) for each teams that was an ultimate failure.
Outside of the expansion year team, "worst ever" would be subjective. Now, if we're talking Front Offices...
Toni Stahl is a contender. 40 minute MLS career. 2 yellows and never to be seen again. It was the very first Union game ever. He started, then disappeared forever!
There were players on their inaugural roster, mostly Guadalajara youth/reserve players, who were badly out of their depth in MLS. Also a few guys from their final season, career USL players who were signed only because they were Mexican-American. Only thing is, most of the mediocre Mexicans of 2005 and Mexican-Americans of 2014 sort of blur together because there were so many of them and it's hard to pick any who were more awful than the others. But Chivas USA did have the player who over-promised and under-delivered more than any other in MLS. I'm referring to Victor Estupiñan, who came into the league promising to score 30 goals a season, and went back to Ecuador after one season in which he scored once in 9 appearances. As of 2016, Estupiñan still has yet to reach 30 professional goals in his entire career (11 years and counting).
Serouously - 70-80% of the players that have played for TFC would have a shout at the worst player in the history of the league. Some god awful players have gone through our club. We could likely field 3 or 4 teams full of ex-TFC players that fit the bill of worst ever. Special mention to Marco Reda, Adam Braz, Andrea Lombardo, Andy Welsh, Rohan Ricketts, Martin Saric and Ravis Hscanovics. There are probably another two or three dozen that are equally bad that I can't recall because mind brain is thankfully repressing the memories.
Jose Nasco has finally been dethroned... The worst player being a police officer with terrible facial hair who came from the lower divisions is so MLS 1.0... In MLS 2.0 the worst player is a team captain, brought in on a TAM-level salary, who played at the highest levels in Spain and Germany, and has 16 caps for Norway! That's right it's Vadim Demidov "who should not be put in the backline again under any circumstances"... Regarding Nasco I wrote: Well Demidov has had three disasterous games out of four, but he didn't even play in the other one! His MLS game log makes Nasco's look not-so-embarrassing:
Without Demidov, Minnesota looks expansion-team bad on defense. With him, it's the worst of all time.
