The great Ajax team of 1971/72 set a record that lasted for 44 years. They won 26 matches in a row in all competitions, finally losing to Go Ahead Eagles in the Eredivisie. This was the longest known winning run by a professional top-division club, before TNS of Wales gained international publicity by winning 27 in a row, in late 2016... then blew a 3-1 lead in the next game v Newtown.

The record in women's football is currently being set by Corinthians in Brazil. Beating São José 1-0 in the playoffs was their 28th win in a row, and puts them in the semi-final against Flamengo this Sunday in the 2019 Brasileirão Feminino. Two further wins in the historic Paulista, over Ferroviária (3-1) and Ponte Preta (3-0), have made it 30 wins in a row.

Corinthians won the games with a defence marshalled by 'Pardal' Ingrid Frisanco, and a strikeforce led by Millene, the league's all-time top scorer ahead of injured teammate Gabi Nunes. They've done all this in competitive tournaments, and without being especially dominant. In the 30 wins, 14 were by one or two goals, since their last defeat to Santos in March. The record includes 2 wins over their rivals Santos, the 2018 South American runners-up and Paulista winners, who'll hope to retain that cup and end the streak. (It can't last forever.) If it does, Corinthians are in the women's Libertadores in October as Brazil's previous champions – as covered in the thread CONMEBOL club WoSo

If there's a connection between Corinthians' and Ajax's different achievements, it's that they've occurred during two revolutions in the sport. The success of Total Football was made possible partly by the increased player fitness brought by Dutch professionalism after 1954. Professional women's football is new in many countries, giving millions of potential players the possibility, for the first time, of seeking a football career in a home league. In such a scenario, perhaps a special team can get more of an advantage. Until it's ruined by Go Ahead Eagles, of course.

    Flamengo 1 - 2 Corinthians Brasileirão Feminino semi-final 1st leg, 8 Sep 2019
    (Ana Carla 64' - Érika 33', Victória Albuquerque 76')

Flamengo's Ana Carla equalized in the second half, giving the nominal home team a good chance of a draw in their first women's home game in Cariacica, a match played after Brazil WNT internationals. But Victória Albuquerque hit a volley for Corinthians that won this first leg 2-1. They'll defend their lead in São Paulo on Sunday 15 Sep, after a Paulista game on 11 Sep against Clube Atlético Juventus.

    Corinthians 4 - 0 Clube Atlético Juventus Paulista Feminino, 11 Sep 2019
    (Grazi 34', 90', Victória Albuquerque 68', Suellen 70')

National semifinalists Corinthians and Ferroviária are also set to meet in the Paulista semis starting next week. With 8 changes to the XI, Timão won this final group game after Juventus matched them early on. On as a sub, Victória Albuquerque scored again, but was stretchered off in the last minute with an apparent back injury. - Match report: Meutimao (Archived)

    Corinthians 2 - 0 Flamengo Brasileirão Feminino semi-final 2nd leg, 15 Sep 2019
    (Tamires 42', Ingryd 89')

Corinthians are in the Brazilian championship final against Ferroviária, who they'll be seeing a lot of in the next few weeks. In Sunday's semi-final with Flamengo, Tamires opened the scoring with a great strike on a counter attack, and Ingryd found a lot of space in the middle to hit a late goal, sealing the win and a 4-1 aggregate score.

, nah kidding, but Corinthians' world-record run has ended, perhaps never to be bettered! 34 wins in a row...

    Ferroviária 0 - 4 Corinthians Paulista Feminino semi-final 1st leg, 18 Sep 2019
    (Pardal 50', Millene 63', Maiara 76', Victória Albuquerque 90')
Corinthians' second-choice XI overcame a spirited Ferroviária, Railway club, who had good chances to score in a goalless first half. After Pardal opened the scoring with a long-range goal, Ferroviária still pressed ahead and could have equalized at 0-1 down, but Corinthians' subs forced more goals, including a fine volley by Maiara. - Match report: Meutimao (Archived)

And the match that ended the winning streak, yesterday at Estádio Fonte Luminosa:

    Ferroviária 1 - 1 Corinthians Brasileirão Feminino final 1st leg, 22 Sep 2019
    (Aline Milene 1' - Erika 45')
In the national final in Araraquara, Ferroviária had only 2 lineup changes, and hit Corinthians cold in the first minute, with a smart goal by Aline Milene past GK Lelê. Erika made it 1-1 before half-time. The tired Ferroviária were only surviving in the second half, but their secret tactic of "Play for penalties for 180 minutes" served them well in winning the quarter- and semifinals on spot-kicks, and they held on for the draw! Next week they'll attempt to shock the favourites again, in the final decider in São Paulo.
