I don't know what we can do. I don't think anybody outside Austin wants to see them leave, but MLS isn't listening. Precourt should never have been allowed to buy the franchise under the terms he offered, and he wouldn't have been if MLS didn't want the team moved. This seems to have been a done deal from jump. And, unfortunately, you're not going to get a lot of protest support out of the rest of the league's fans because 1) American sports fans are well acquainted with teams moving, and 2) the country's too big and the league too small still for there to be a lot of interaction or a sense of community.
Deadly counter. Hope they can pull it off. I'll be in Mexico when they play their Korea match, so that should be exciting. Seeing Germany lose is almost as good as seeing Russia lose for me.
I guess it might not be quite so sunny in Dooshland today! Ole White Black an Blue must be in a funk.
Meanwhile. The Swiss draw level a header from a corner. 1-1 Coutinho scored from a shot he perfected while at Liverpool. Right foot shot, left side of the area bent across in front of the keeper.
Ugh. I don't see Brasil not getting out of the GS, but this doesn't bode well. In 2014 I said all the way up to the QF that they weren't ready, and I don't think Neymar could have helped them beat the Germans in that semi anyways.
Croatia can beat Nigeria, Mexico can beat Germany, Iceland and Switzerland get results against giants; you'd think Poland could get three points against Senegal. Wrong. I'm already angry at the impending defeat on Tuesday. Useless fvckers!
Was at a NJ minor league baseball game today. The announcer was running down some scores. He says "Mexico beat Germany by building an impenetrable wall with their defense" That's a compliment I guess?
I would think so. I'll say this, a lot of World Cup teams these days have damned good defenses. I think if the WC champs of the Seventies and Eighties faced Switzerland or Iceland or yes, Mexico, they would be baffled. All the time and space taken away from them.
IMO, Mexico has generally been a better team and has a superior footballing tradition than either of these. That said, you can't really drop a squad into a tournament outside its era. But you can imagine a 1970 Brasil squad with the same diet, training and tactics as the current players are accustomed to. And that would be an absolute massacre in favor of the guys in the yellow shirts.
For sure. Just an example of excellent defending this Cup, not a comment on their overall abilities. Although the Swiss are tough right now, their best team ever.
I think you're seeing less attacking ball all around out of fear of counterattacking, not so much because great defending but because everybody's better now all around. And the Germans and Argentines aren't known for beating people 7-1 (or 3-0 or 4-0) on the regular anyway. We'll know in a week or so. I'll take a World Cup R16 over a Euro QF all day long.
Germany scored 43 goals in 10 WCQ matches. As for Argentina, they scored 4 against some team called the U.S. a while back. Of course, the U.S. is a minnow, not a powerhouse like Iceland, so there's that.
