If this turns out to be true, then Wilpon is in a financial mess. Needless to say, that will screw NYC2. http://www.cnbc.com/id/28196568
If this turns out to be true than Yes you may very well be right! I know happy this makes some people but lets see! I think if you ask KROD - Wilpon is not really that hurt
Lot's of people are becoming millionaires in today's economy. The trouble is that they were previously billionaires.
Lol. From the article... Update: CNBC's David Faber is now reporting that Wilpon and Katz, though their investment entity Sterling Equities, could have lost as much as $300 million with Madoff. Ouch.
NYC2 I didn't think was even in the most recent running. I know the MLS was happily expecting a proposal and expansion app but didn't get it.
that was part of the 50Bill Ponzi scheme I've been hearing about on TV. Hopefully they got in on the 'ground floor' /me whistles
I for one would be sad if this affected NYC's chance for MLS. I would not be sad, however, if this affected the Mets. Go Braves!!!!!!
luckily for some people here, this doesnt look like it will impact the Mets all too much, but it does seem like it will significantly impact Wilpon's ability and interest to invest in an MLS team....
Despite rumors, I think you are correct: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/14/sports/baseball/14wilpon.html?_r=2 NOTE: I cannot control the completely misleading Times headline. It's another eye-catching headline with a story that says something else.
I dont think you can say this means YES - AT ALL! Its good for Mets fans - YES but MLS2NYC - no one knows how its going to be funded! This does not say YES to MLS2NYC at all - it does not say NO but it does not say YES!
This to me, says that MLS2NYC is still viable until Wilpon comes out and says that he is no longer interested. Granted that I'm just more optomistic than most. Nick, you know I'm trying to read between the lines.
Yea - I know dude - your always optomistic - but as long as you admit you are reading between the lines because in black and white - thats the METS - now we know the MEts have been tied with this - lets hope you are right! I think its bad timing for MLS2NYC but we shall see!
If by YES, you are referring to the Yankees Entertainment & Sports Network, I personally hope so. Now that Hal is running the baseball ops, Hank needs something to do with his time...
Yup, tried to convince daddy to buy Tottenham Hotspur in the '80s according to reports. A Steinbrenner owned New York Cosmos franchise would be my ideal scenario.
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/2008-01-26-2494724397_x.htm Pretty far down in the article. I was wrong, it was in the 90s The article was written earlier this year. So basically someone needs to convince Hank that he should be investing in the USA -- with a premium brand name like the New York Cosmos. Maybe then they could strike up that global marketing partnership with Manchester United the Yanks talked about too ...
there seems to be a huge step in going from a major european soccer team, preferably in the Premier League, to a start up team here at home. if NYC2 happens under someones watch other than wilpon then the question starts to be where they would build a stadium.....
Let me get this straight. You're suggesting Wilpon (Mets) and Steinbrenner (Yankees) form a partnership for an MLS team? Now, I know squat about NYC, but from here that seems even more insane than endlessly hoping for a return of the Cosmos.
