According to UEFA co-efficients the strongest leagues in Europe in the 10 years prior to the Heysel ban were:

    Season Points League

    1974-75 12.33 BUNDESLIGA (Germany)
    1975-76 10.50 DIVISION D’HONNEUR (Belgium)
    1976-77 10.00 PRIMERA DIVISION (Spain)
    1977-78 12.50 EREDIVISIE (Holland)
    1978-79 14.00 BUNDESLIGA (Germany)
    1979-80 13.71 BUNDESLIGA (Germany)
    1980-81 08.66 EREDIVISIE (Holland)
    1981-82 09.00 BUNDESLIGA (Germany)
    1982-83 10.50 PREMIER DIVISION (Scotland)
    1983-84 12.66 FIRST DIVISION (England)
    1984-85 11.00 SERIE A (Italy)

Only once did the English First Division top the yearly ranking in that timespan.

Well, I don't think they're popular enough that people in continental Europe would want England to have more teams than any other league.

The claim was that "It wasn't until that PL money came in and English players were replaced by foreign talent that the top Prem League teams became a European force." Top coefficient or no, in what universe would winning 7 out of 8 ECs not be considered being a "European force"?

The thing is English clubs used to be hugely popular in Europe as they used to be what football is all about - local pride, history, emotion. The big money influence is gradually killing that off. It's the traditional English football fan who I feel sorry for as he's probably witnessing this process with disgust.

I have no idea on the popularity of English teams in Europe, but remember that the TV market for the CL extends way beyond Europe's borders, and in that regard English teams are clearly the most popular. Personally I really don't want to see more English teams in the CL, but in strictly financial terms there's probably an argument for it.

But as someone mentioned before, UEFA does not operate solely on financial terms. They tend to be very political, and are often at odds with England. I don't know why anyone believes that UEFA would grant England more teams.

    Self owned.
Ducko admits they only rose to prominence through importing players.
    Thanks for that .

english clubs clean up with zero imports.
Get banned and the italian clubs packed with imports start winning all of a sudden.
    just what everyone has said.

Duck manson must have alot of spare time up in norway to come up with all this sh1t.
Got a vivid imagination aint he?
read through this thread to see how many times manson has contradicted himself. must be a world record.

Actually Serie A didn't start to dominate until 1988-89. Between 1985 and 1988 there was no clear-cut dominating league in Europe (just like there wasn't one between 1975 and 1985). The Spanish and German leagues did better than Serie A in those years.

    Season Points League

    1985-86 10.17 PRIMERA DIVISION (Spain)
    1986-87 08.00 BUNDESLIGA (Germany)
    1987-88 09.80 PRIMERA DIVISION (Spain)
    1988-89 12.17 SERIE A (Italy)
    1989-90 11.71 SERIE A (Italy)
    1990-91 12.50 FIRST DIVISION (England)
    1991-92 10.66 SERIE A (Italy)
    1992-93 13.66 SERIE A (Italy)
    1993-94 14.14 SERIE A (Italy)
    1994-95 13.29 SERIE A (Italy)

Sensationally, in the first European season after their ban, the English First Division topped the UEFA co-efficients!

I think the english are superior in football compared to the rest at the moment.
They got the best coashes and experts in their league, best management, best investors, best players etc
Thats just the status quo though.
This will also change again in some time I bet.

Milans success was pretty much based around the 3 Dutchmen. They signed them after the 1988 European championship. Inter Milan had the 3 germans and they did well in the UEFA cup. All based around money and imports.
    Some things dont change.
Lets face it ,they didnt win a single European cup from 1970 to 1984.

Wrong. Van Basten and Gullit were signed before the 1988 European Championship.

England dominated the European Cup over that period - there is no disputing that. 7 wins in 8 years (or even the 10 years highlighted) is almost total domination of one tournament. Their performance in the UEFA and Cup Winners Cups was nothing special (4 wins total I think over that period) which dragged the overall level of performance down.

To say English clubs dominated Europe is not true, but to say they did not dominate the European Cup is likewise not true.

Interestingly, the First Division of England did much better overall from the mid-60s to early-70s, mainly due to very good results in the Fairs' Cup/UEFA Cup:

    UEFA co-efficients

    1964-65 14.25 FIRST DIVISION (England)
    1965-66 12.16 FIRST DIVISION (England)
    1966-67 11.60 SCOTTISH LEAGUE
    1967-68 11.66 NEMZETI BAJNOKSAG (Hungary)
    1968-69 18.00 NEMZETI BAJNOKSAG (Hungary)
    1969-70 12.50 FIRST DIVISION (England)
    1970-71 11.86 FIRST DIVISION (England)
    1971-72 09.60 SCOTTISH LEAGUE
    1972-73 11.00 FIRST DIVISION (England)
    1973-74 10.17 BUNDESLIGA (Germany)
