The Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics used to be in the same year. Then they changed it to one in each even-numbered year like the World Cup and Euro. If the Summer Olympics split in two, would you propose the Outdoor Olympics and Indoor Olympics be in the same year or have three out of four years have an Olympics? There are expenses such as setting up an Olympic Village for the athletes and transporting players, coaches, media, judges, referees, etc. that would be larger for an Outdoor Olympics and Indoor Olympics combined than for one Summer Olympics even if the number of athletes was the same both ways.
Three out of four. Or the beach and water sports could be split from the stadium sports, to complete four Olympic games: summer (beach/water), autumn (indoor), winter (ice/snow) and spring (stadiums). But they would be split between different countries.
The idea of splitting sports is good if there was a need to have so many sports in the Olympics in the first place. I don't think there's such a need. Other than track & field and swimming which are the cornerstones of the Olympics, every other sport should be on the table. Without going into detail, i'd eliminate sports that have championships/titles that are more important than the Olympics unless those sports were completely amateur. Some pro golfers have even said this. If the IOC wanted to appeal to younger sports fans, rather than add karate they should add amateur MMA and eliminate taekwondo, judo, and boxing. I'd use that as a starting point. There were many more countries that entered World Cup qualifying for futsal and beach soccer compared to Olympic qualifiers for sports like water polo, field hockey or handball. Here are the numbers of countries that entered for this year's World Cup futsal tournament : UEFA-45; OFC:-6; CONCACAF-18; CONMEBOL-10; CAF-14; AFC-26. These are the qualifying numbers from last year's World Cup beach soccer tournament: UEFA-24; CONCACAF-16; CONMEBOL-10; CAF-20; AFC-15; OFC-1.
FIFA president, Infantino, came out with a statement that he wants to see changes with the Olympic soccer tournament. Does FIFA watch these forums?
