It may be because I'm in Australia now and watch many more neutral games than other fans - Foxtel define my soccer diet these days.
I don't wan't to appreciate the skills of rival teams, I want them to be crap. I want my team to pummel them into the ground and totally humiliate them. Reading 8th in Division 1. Swindon bankrupt and possibly going down to the 3rd division. Oxford already there. Happy days are here again..... Just to explain that a bit, if you don't understand what causes people to dislike their natural local rivals then you are more likely to look for 'other' reasons to explain what to you is quite a mystery. i.e. there is an intense rivalry between two clubs, one of which has tenuous jewish links. I can't believe it's just down to their proximity and playing records, so it must be down to the anti-semetism.
>I don't wan't to appreciate the skills of rival teams, I want them to be crap. I want my team to pummel them into the ground and totally humiliate them. Yes, that is true when your club is playing. But that's true of all opposition clubs. What I'm getting at it is disliking one particular club over and above the others. As a Man Utd fan I don't see disliking, say Bolton, beyond that of other clubs makes any difference to my support for Utd. When Utd are playing them I "dislike" them all but then my enjoyment of the game comes from my involvent with the result rather than my objective appreciation of the game But if I were watching Bolton versus Birmingham I don't see that shouting for Birmingham would in any way support my allegience to Utd.
Yeah, but you try telling that to a Bolton fan. It's all subjective. Leeds hate United more than any other club. United hate Liverpool more than any other club. Liverpool and Leeds also share a less than rosy relationship, whereas the Everton and Liverpool thing is driven more by them than by us. It's part of "the rich tapestry".
I wouldn't argue with you that it doesn't exist. It clearly does. But it's a peculiar way of supporting your own club. It seems to me to be a very destructive approach to the game.
Erm ... well. What can I say. T'was ever thus? With all due respect, if this is really such a peculiarity to you, then I can only suggest a lengthier spell immersed in the game at the front line. Welcome to football.
I tend to agree with Matt on this. When you support a club, you pick up their traditional rivals. There's no rhyme or reason to it, nor is there siupposed to be. That's the beauty of it. Dave
why is/are Spurs hated so much ...maybe 'cos they won't stop yapping about why others hate them so much
Seems to me that any fan who has to boost his support for his club by disliking others isn't finding sufficient merit in his club in the first place to sustain the support
RichardL....interesting point. I saw the City vs. Utd match and obviously City fans HATE Utd. I mean beating them was better than winning a million dollars. WOW..i loved the passion. I have never seen fans so insane. The closest I saw to that was the Newcastle/Sunderland match. Sunderland obviously sucks, but the Nutd fans loved beating the Black Cats. Newcastle fans are pretty intense. Later, Patrick
Why I hate Arsenal Geography - Personally one of the reasons is,I believe, because they're the first one's to take the p1ss when you lose 'cos they're closest. We do likewise when they have a bad result. Then all sorts of other factors take over, like chants, 'Spurs are on their way to Auschwitz, Hitler's gonna gas 'em again...'. Nice one Gooners! I hated Arsenal in the early 80's under Don Howe when they were totally crap and won nothing, late 80's under George Graham when they were boring, crap, and won loads, early 90's cackness under Bruce Rioch, to present day domination under Arsehole 'I didn't see it' Wanker. I would continue but language fails me. I hate those fu(king (unts and I hope they die.:-D
Re: Re: Why I hate Arsenal It's the sort of thing you'd get three guys in a bar singing, not a whole stand.

Re: Re: Re: Why I hate Arsenal And what reaction are they met with? Arsenal supporters are pretty well represented here in NYC. Whenever the Gunners have an important match, the soccer bars fill up with them. The stuff you hear is all: "Vi-er-UH! Vi-er-UH! "'E comes from SE-NE-GUW! "'E plays for AR-SE-NUW" Doesn't quite live up to the reputation... Lede from: Simon Kuper. "The World's Game is Not Just a Game: why soccer matters so much everywhere but here." The New York Times Magazine. 5/26/02. pp. 36-39. From @FC The Electronic Arsenal Fanzine :
i went to spurs arsenal today and this was my second time and the atmosphere was great spurs were singing alot of songs about arsenal and vice versa
i watched this one on FSW as well and i have to say, despite my lack of allegiance to either team (i rooted for spurs thanks to my hatred of arsenal) i haven't enjoyed watching a game this much in some time. the atmosphere was incredible, and it was rather fast-paced as well. fun time all around.
...and now for something completely different! <img src=http://lib1.store.vip.sc5.yahoo.com/lib/herobuilders/Spank.jpg>
