In our profiles to update them? I certainly don't need it there or want it there. Why is it mandatory?

You can safely supply your postcode. You don't really have fnord anything to worry about.

You can type in a fake postcode but then you will miss out on seasonal lottery prizes from BigSoccer Shop.

1-800-ASSHOLE is my telephone number if ya want it ;)

I'll just do that then, even though it's a bit far to have to give a postcode just to change your profile.

We ask for the postcode so that we can better understand the regions of the country/world our users come from.

How does a postal code make one better understand the regions of a country?

What if you're from a country that doesn't have a postal code?

That's not what he said. He said "we ask for the postcode so that we can better understand the regions of the country/world our users come from."

Which countries don't have postal codes?

So you're saying tribesman have postal codes? Some still use computers and electronics but don't have a post code.

Removing "our users come from" to ask how it makes one better understand the regions, doesn't really change anything substantial. The question still remains: how?

    LINK (if it's on Wiki, it's true ;) )

    The bottom list.

Either Hong Kong or Taiwan (pretty sure it was one of these) don't have one either, had to send a package via Fedex at work once to one of these, waisted an half hour trying to find out something that didn't exist.

According to this Wiki, out of all the countries in the world the following exceptiosn exist:

Hong Kong: No use of postal codes
Ireland: No use of postal codes; however, Dublin is divided into postal districts on syntax Dublin 9.
Macau: No use of postal codes
Panama: No use of postal codes. Deliveries to PO Boxes only
Zimbabwe: No use of postal codes

The question you asked is completely different than the explanation Huss gave. He's not trying to understand the regions. He wants to know where his users come from. What's so hard to understand about that?

    List of postal codes

Hong Kong: No use of postal codes
Ireland: No use of postal codes; however, Dublin is divided into postal districts on syntax Dublin 9.
Macau: No use of postal codes
Panama: No use of postal codes. Deliveries to PO Boxes only
Zimbabwe: No use of postal codes.

And what if somebody from Hong Kong joins up and can't change their profile because of this silly mandatory field?

I guess what's hard to understand is why he wants to know this, that it is mandatory to fill it in now.

And what if you're from a country that doesn't have it? Make a fake one? If that is the advice, then again what is the point of having to give a postal code?

Places that are smaller probably. :)

He wants to know where his users are. They can elect not to tell him by putting in a fake postal code.

Yeah, I guess the scores of thousands of Irish, Hong Kongian, Zimbabweian, Macauan and Panamanian users on BigSoccer will have to do exactly that.

Because most people who aren't paranoid assholes and/or the Unibomber will put their postal code in their profile and think nothing of it.

Funny thing is you may be revealing more about yourself by going on about your paranoia toward postal cord than by simply typing in your real postal code...

That's not an answer to "why", saying it over and over again doesn't make it so. ;)

So he doesn't want to know where his users are in that case? Weird.

Aah, the old "there must be something wrong with you if you don't want to give that info". Why don't you post your first and last name, adress, home telephone number, mobile number, email adress, a picture of you in this thread. You're not a stinkin' commie are ya are ya. Please. :D

Didn't realise that only asking why this is mandatory to fill in now, would get me called a 'paranoid asshole' though. If I had, I would have asked sooner.
