Why do people complain about Argentina when they are defensive?

In 1990 and 2014 Argentina seemed more like defense-first rather than attack first, and they made it as far as the final both times. The rest of the time since then they have been about attacking first, but have got eliminated in the quarterfinals or earlier. I noticed that it is mainly from non-Argentines, but why should people complain when it seems to have worked better than offense for Argentina?

Because Argentina is the land of beautiful, cultured football. They actually won the WC, in 78 and 86, playing expansively and with ideas.

It’s because Barcelona fans from the 21st century have been spoiled with Tiki-Taka. The reality is to play that high-press “champagne” football, it can only be achieved if you have the best player or a top 5 player ITW at every position. Otherwise you’re getting run over.

Argentina from 2014-2016 were not in that position, maybe if they used a front 3 of Lavezzi-Messi-Di Maria and midfield trio of Biglia-Banega-Perez, the attack would’ve been more free flowing. I felt during those years the attack relied too heavily on Messi as a trequartista.

Argentina had the talent in those years, it's the coaches who didn't understand the concept of champagne football. Look at the current coaching staff, players who understand how it works, players who played under a pekerman youth system. Pekerman was that brand of modern, free flowing beautiful football. You saw many glimpses of it in the 2022 world cup, but at the same time you saw how they shifted to a more defensive structure. It wasn't always "tiki taka" football, it was a cohesion of everything.

Also a coaching staff who understand that you need to play an updated version, evolved version of that free flowing game with pressing and defensive pressing. European coaches learned to shut down Tiki Taka, it's not that you can't play it, it's that you have to understand how to counter your counter.
