Spain was already wrecking Italy and Ireland by the time he came in and scored. That was like serving candy to a baby. Torres is a broken player ifs funny how some players all of a sudden just lose overnight.
He scored the 1st and 3rd goal against Ireland, though to be fair they would have won that game regardless of his goals or if he played. You're right about the game with Italy though but he helped complete the wrecking. I feel for Torres. Hated him for leaving to go to Chelsea but damn his career since has been quite pitiful. He def tries. Almost like he's been forced to wear kryptonite.
I'm not sure if we are still paying for him to be honest. From the sound of it this was essentially a free transfer. He wasn't able to get a compensation package from Chelsea. If he's getting paid, I don't think it's that much.
Torres is a failure only if you want goals from him. His expectations were through the roof, and with that price tag why wouldn't they be. But, he won a Champions League and a Europa League title and played a huge part in both of those campaigns. We won everything we wanted outside of a league title under him. So IMO it wasn't a failure.
Surprisingly, he played more league and total games for Chelsea than he did for Liverpool, despite less than half of the production. He had to be doing something right, and in response to this thread, Carroll was just a complete joke.
Torres with 45 goals in 172 matches for Chelsea compared to 81 goals in 143 matches for the Reds. Now how does Torres stats count against the likes of Shevchenko when he was at the club?
20 in 110 league games for Chelsea and 65 in 102 for Liverpool. Chelsea win trophies. In the 4 years with him they won the CL, UEFA and FA cups. In the 4 years before him they won the League, 2 FA cups and a League cup. Of course he was a failure. Baffles my mind that anyone could come to a different conclusion. He is being offloaded for nothing, players who were even a moderate success don't get shown the door while they still have 2 years of their contract remaining.
If you look at goals, then of course he was a failure. If you look at the success the club had while he was here, then no, I don't consider it a failure. He was responsible for some key moments in us winning the CL and EL. I'm not going to condemn the lad for his time here, but it was time to move on. He wasn't scoring and we needed a different player.
By that logic Carroll was involved in winning Liverpool their first silverware in 6 years, so shouldn't be considered a flop. He was, so was Torres. Different teams have different expectations and Chelsea were not meeting theirs while Torres was a player. Nor was Torres meeting his expectations as a player. He was bought for £50m and did not fulfill his expectations, he flopped. Torres was a success at Liverpool, where he won nothing and was a failure at Chelsea where he won three trophies.
Juan Veron failed at United, won the league. Kaka failed at Madrid, won the league. Shevchenko failed at Chelsea, won the FA and League cups. Torres failed at Chelsea.
Kaka only failed at Madrid based on expectations. He did pretty decently but with the amount of the transfer and how he was still a world class player, well yeah.
Carol was a utter joke. Torres on the other hand had team success but Chelsea won despite of Torres not because of Torres . He was a liability and for the money he was worth he did not even come close to meeting expectations. There is a reason they let him walk with still two years on his deal. Sheva was already past his prime when he came to Chelsea so that's a different story all together.
Well, as we can see, both of them already left these clubs. Some players are just not able to adapt to the new teams and cannot achieve the same level as in former teams because of their lack of universality, they depend too much on their teammates.
