    Seattle 2 - WFC 0

Ugh... I was thinking we were a little thin .

    From the Vancouver Sun:

Women 'Caps see unbeaten streak ended

    Vancouver Sun

    May 27, 2005

The Vancouver Whitecap women will have to wait a week before they get an opportunity to make amends for their first official loss in more than two seasons.

The Whitecap women suffered their first defeat in 32 games Wednesday when they were blanked 2-0 in Seattle by the women Sounders in W-League play.

The Whitecap women, now 2-1 on the season, don't play again until June 3 when they face the Arizona Heatwave in Arizona.

Until Wednesday's loss the last "official" loss for the Whitecap women came in their home opener to the 2003 season to the same Sounders.

During the 31-game undefeated streak the Whitecap women did suffer a loss on penalty kicks. However, under international FIFA regulations that is considered a draw for statistical purposes.

The Whitecaps shouldn't take the loss in Seattle too hard due to a couple of mitigating factors. First, Vancouver dominated play -- out shooting the women Sounders 21-8. Second, the Whitecap women were missing seven regulars who are currently on national team duty.

The Sounders got an outstanding effort in the nets from Lisa Brookens and goals from Hillary Heath and Malia Arrant.

Didn't Seattle beat them last year early on as well?

If memory serves me correctly WFC went undefeated last year. I think it was a tie 2-2 early last year. They have been a thorn in the Caps side, as they accounted for the only loss the year prior in the first game.

I don't think the Whitecaps are as deep as they were last year. Next game is this Friday in Arizona...that could be interesting.

Whitecaps have been outstanding the last couple of years. The teams that have seemed to give them trouble, for what ever reasons, have been rivals Seattle and Arizona. I believe these are the only teams that have beaten then during the regular season.

But this year may be more difficult, especially if they see their roster depleted by National team duties. The Colorado teams have been strong of late, and an away weekend stretch that has the Whitecaps playing 3 games in 4 days may give them some trouble.

And then three in a row with Seattle (home and away during the July 4th Holiday weekend, could put them to the test.

Agreed that the upcoming stretches will test them. They have never had it easy with Seattle, and the long road trips do tend to take a toll.

It would be nice if Portland, or even the Alberta teams could make a go of it. That would make the schedule more interesting. Hopefully San Diego can get it together as well, they have a great soccer community, so I'll keep my fingers crossed. I must say I'm enjoying the men's schedule a lot more this season with all the different teams coming in.

The club system which they have been working on seems to be coming through as players from the Reserve (PCSL) and Super Y teams are getting in the mix a little bit. It's fantastic to see.

It's interesting to see they have signed a couple of American players lately.

    Whitecaps - Denver June 11

Whitecaps FC 3-0 over Denver Lady Cougars before an announced crowd of 3637. This is the second game in a row the Caps have not allowed a shot on goal!

The Whitecaps now get over a week's rest before heading on the road for four games, starting Thursday, June 23 against Denver. That's the first of three games in four days, in the annual Colorado road trip. The Whitecaps next home game is Sunday, July 3 against Seattle.

Hey Whitecap fans, here's plenty of photos from the game vs the AZ Heatwave last week. Tough, well played game with VC winning 2-1 over AZ. AZ was missing the 4 Mex. National Team players as they were on commitment in Mexico but of course we will never know what the outcome would have been with them..

The Whitecaps had a tough loss Wed. night, June 15, 3-0 to the U.S. U-21 WNT. As reported on gobigred (forums are down right now), goals were scored by Tarpley (43'), Rodriguez (47') and O'Reilly (51'). Too bad it was a closed door game. I'm sure many thousands of fans would have been interested in this intriguing match-up.

It's important for the team to challenge themselves. It gives them a realistic assessment of where they stand and where they have to improve.

WHITECAPS TO HOST THE WASHINGTON DC FREEDOM
…Whitecaps Women will take on the Freedom in a two game exhibition series.

VANCOUVER , B.C., Friday, June 17 - Vancouver Whitecaps Director of Soccer Operations, Bob Lenarduzzi, today announced that the Whitecaps Women will take on the reigning WUSA champions, the Washington DC Freedom, in a special two game exhibition series. The first match will take place at Caledonia Park soccer stadium in Nanaimo on Tuesday, July 19 at 6:30 p.m. and the second match will be held at Swangard Stadium at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 21.

“This is a great opportunity for our fans to witness some exciting soccer in addition to our regular league play,” said Lenarduzzi. “I know that our players and coaches are very much looking forward to competing against this formidable squad in both Nanaimo and Vancouver.”

The Washington DC Freedom come to British Columbia as the reigning WUSA champions; the league suspended operations following the 2003 season. While WUSA is still on hiatus, many of the league’s former teams, including the Freedom, continue to travel for special exhibitions. Over their history, the Freedom have featured some of America ’s best women players including Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach.

The match on July 21 will also provide an opportunity for soccer fans to raise money for a very worthwhile cause. Two dollars from each ticket purchased will be donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF). The evening will also include other fundraising initiatives designed to generate funds for the CBCF. For example, the Whitecaps will be wearing a special jersey for this game that will feature embroidered pink ribbons on either sleeve. With special thanks to Umbro, these jerseys will only be worn for this game, and will be auctioned off to support the CBCF.

Tickets for the July 21 game will be available as of Saturday, June 18 at all Ticketmaster locations. To order tickets by phone, please call 604-280-4400 or visit Ticketmaster online at www.ticketmaster.ca.

For more ticket information for the game in Nanaimo on the July 18, please contact the Nanaimo Youth Soccer office at 250-729-9400, or visit them online at www.nanaimosoccer.ca.

W-League Whitecaps storm into first place

    Vancouver Sun

    Friday, June 24, 2005

Goals by midfielder Ashley McGhee, striker Katie Thorlakson and defender Sophie Schmidt lifted the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 3-0 victory over the Denver Lady Cougars Thursday night in a W-League women's soccer game that was stopped for almost two hours due to a lightning storm.

The 'Caps took an early first-half lead on goals by Mc-Ghee in the 17th minute and Thorlakson in the 24th before play was halted in the 34th minute as lightning crackled around suburban Shea Stadium. Schmidt iced the game for the Whitecaps by scoring in the 90th minute.

It was the second goal of the season by McGhee, the fourth of the season by Thorlakson and the first of the campaign by Schmidt.

The victory improved the Whitecaps' record to 6-1-0 for first place in the Western Conference -- two points ahead of the second-place Arizona Heatwave (5-1-0), which plays host to the fifth-place Seattle Sounders (2-4-1) tonight.

The Whitecaps had not played since June 11, when they defeated the Lady Cougars 3-0 at Burnaby's Swangard Stadium.

Thursday's game was the start of a four-games-in-10-days road trip, which will be followed by four consecutive home games, starting July 3 against Seattle, to close out their regular season.

Looks like Sian Bagshawe is much improved this year. Remember that she was the backup GK for Edmonton last year.

Curious that Andrea Neil didn't go with the rest of the NT members. Wonder if this means she isn't a starter on Sunday.

I'm curious to see how the Caps make out Sunday vs Fort Collins. Similar line-up to the Mile High game I'm guessing.

Lady 'Caps extend streak over Colorado

    Vancouver Sun
    Saturday, June 25, 2005

GOLDEN, Colo. -- The Vancouver Whitecaps continued their long domination of Colorado home teams Friday with a 2-1 victory over the Mile High Mustangs in a W-League women's soccer game at the North Area Athletic Complex.

The Whitecaps opened the scoring only one minute after the opening kickoff on a goal by midfielder Ashley McGhee, who made a solo breakaway run for her second tally of the season.

The winning goal was scored by veteran midfielder Andrea Neil, who scored in the 29th minute off a free kick taken by defender Martino Franko. It was Neil's first goal of the season.

Mile High striker Mary Everett closed the gap to 2-1 in the 30th minute.

Vancouver teams, which include the Whitecaps and Breakers, are 13-0-1 on Colorado road trips since the 2001 season. The Breakers and Whitecaps have outscored Colorado home teams 50-8 over that time.

"This one was a hard-fought, gut-check victory," said Whitecaps' head coach Pat Rohla. "I think we played the second-best team in our conference tonight. Mile High created a lot of scoring chances, but we weathered the storm. I was very proud of the team. It was a character win."

Rohla praised Whitecaps' goalkeeper Sian Bagshawe.

"Sian made seven saves, many of them spectacular," Rohla said. "It was her best game for the Whitecaps and her performance inspired all of her teammates."

The victory improved the Whitecaps' Western Conference-leading record to 7-1-0.
