Going to San Diego tommorow and going to other places in California I'm not sure about yet think Pasadena as well. Anyway what's fun to do out there? Visiting family but I heard you can get weed delivered. My aunt is a bit annoying
The zoo is amazing. I don't usually recommend zoos, but San Diego's is great. The seals and sea lions on the beaches in La Jolla are worth seeing. That's about it for San Diego. I have not been there since weed was legalized, so I have no information about that.
anecdotal response and only somewhat adjacent to your question, but in summer 2018 in Los Angeles, weed delivery was only available for people with medical cards, recreational weed shops were not that prevalent not sure the state/municipal split on the rule-setting here, but that was my experience
I've decided to take a break after some really good Oregonian hash made it to me. Will see how that goes
I am heading on Amtrak to beautiful Bloomington-Normal Illinois. I have a two day teaching interview for a tenure-track professorship at ISU. Unfortunately, I will likely not have time to sample any of the three brew pubs in the area, as I have a meeting, dinner, and a reception with the University tonight and a 12 hour day tomorrow of teaching demonstrations, "scholarly" presentations, meetings, and a final dinner with the search committee. And, of course, I have a bad cold, just to add to the stress.
That sounds like a fun day trip. Shame amtrak doesn't really run more than a couple trains a day at bad times most of the time.
Trains out of Chicago at 7:--, 9:25 am or 1:00 pm. Last train leaves Normal for Chicago at 8:30 pm. Cost roundtrip in only $32 (cheaper than driving).
I'd have to take the Amtrak to Union station first which runs once a day from my town so it would be quicker to get in my car and drive. I think all the trains connect through Chicago right?
I have taught legal studies for 12 years. I am looking to make the move to full time academia. I am at the end of an 11 hour day of interviews, meetings and presentations. My research presentation did not go well. The rest went very well. I am less than optimistic.
I've been a tenured professor for the past 11 years. I probably wouldn't go into education if I had to start today.
I am at what I consider the end of my career, and teaching is my preference now. I don't think I would have wanted to go into right out of law school, though.
How is Normal? I decided to blow my vacation time because I've thought about quitting everyday for the last 6 months. Looking for stuff that doesn't require too much driving. Might hit up starved Rock again in fall not sure
A bit boring. It is not Madison, that's for sure. The town has been extensively built up since I was last there, but I was expecting a bit more of a "college town" atmosphere. There are a few college bars, which were packed even on a Wednesday night. Not much else. Not having a car (or much time) I was not able to visit any of the three brewpubs Bloomington-Normal, though.
There's not much that B-N has to offer for a vacation. I'm been disappointed every time I stopped in in the last decade or so. There's a near Art Deco movie theater and maybe a lecture or something from ISU - other than that ... umm ... even the places I used to eat there that I used to think were great haven't aged well in my mind. Starved Rock is pretty much always crowded all the time now. If you go on a weekday it'll be a little better. Matthiessen used to be reliably less crowded and about as good (maybe better) but I think the secret is out now, like on the weekends there's reliably zero parking sports on weekends from about March to early November. If it were a National Park it would be close to to the Top Ten in annual attendance. Rockford isn't bad for a short vacation. Japanese gardens, Rock Cut State Park, ice hockey, cheap hotels (or camping, if you like late Fall/Winter camping like I do), some not bad food. Springfield isn't bad for a short vacation if you've never seen the Lincoln Museum, either, and Funks Grove is an enjoyable outdoor spot on the way. Eat a horseshoe at your own risk. Pokagon State Park in Angola isn't bad - it's no Starved Rock but it's also no Starved Rock in attendance, enjoy the weird pizza place and the pickle emporium in town.
