Well, Klinsmann may have revealed his GK depth:

Pretty brutal for Hamid to be behind Rimando. Also not very surprising that outside of Howard (who has 12+ years of EPL experience), none of Klinsmann's top keepers play in MLS.
EDIT: note that Klinsmann said this just today, not in June. (Back in June, he did call Hamid and Johnson part of a lost generation.)

but were Johnson and Hamid really part of a lost generation? I don't follow MLS or our youth squads all that much. I know we failed to make the 2012 and 2016 Olympics but is that really the fault of Johnson or Hamid?

If I remember correctly we had some bad goal keeping blunders during qualifying for the 2012 Olympics.

I think the generation is generally thought of as those born between 89 and 92. It is not just they didn't qualify, but that they hadn't emerged in the national team and many weren't fulfilling their potential. Injuries have impacted Opara, Boyd, and Gyau, but the group also includes Adu, Diskerud, Shea, Agudelo, Okugo, etc. A number of guys are starting come good now.

As @asoc alluded to, their was some poor goalkeeping in that tournament. The one most think of was the injury time goal to El Salvador that eliminated us from qualifying.

Poor Johnson. He was highly rated just a few years ago. I wonder if it's just hype or perhaps playing for crappy teams might have somehow rubbed off on him to a degree.

Hamid def seems majorly overlooked by JK. Perhaps this might be the ideal time for him to go abroad.

I gotta feeling I jinxed Hamid, Horvath, Bingham and Cropper.

Cropper isn't even no.2 at New England?

Bingham should have gone abroad, but he went to Galaxy.

Hamid went to Denmark as a no.1 (played 3 games) and loaned back to MLS. I sure hope he returns

Horvath (I'm still pulling for since he's only 23) was no.2 at Club Brugge for a few months. Became #1 and lost it for 6 months and finished the last 3 games of the season with a league title. Unfortunately, the club went and bought a guy that Real Madrid were interested in. So, he's #2.

  7. Ajax is in need for a second goalie asap, so agents should run to the phone.

  8. Demmit. Feyenoord's goalie is out with a broken bone in his foot for about two months. So now we need a back up for our back up too.

Has the Dutch league ever looked at MLS for keepers?

  10. Donot think so, as goalies are abundant in Europe, so it's not like your going to pay more in salary for a Yank if you can get the same quality in Europe for less. It would only be worth while for a top class goalie to hire him from outside the EU. Ajax wouldnot hire Onana if he wasnot exceptional class, due to the higher salary. He has proven himself and of course jumped far beyond the minimum wage level.
So which mls goalie is exceptional class that comes close to/matches Onana?

The top four MLS clubs last year had goalkeepers who are now 32 or older, so I don't know if them going to Europe would help the national team. NYCFC's Sean Johnson, who was subbed on last night, is 29. He has 6 caps in over 8 years going back to his national team debut on January 22, 2011. I'm not saying he would do well in Europe, but from a USMNT point of view that could be what MLS goalie you want to go to Europe.

I have to wonder if Belgian or Dutch clubs ever look at MLS. Surely, they have evidence at what MLS-trained keepers can do in the PL.

Same as why haven't more Championship clubs put in bids for guys like Johnson or others.

I think we def need our best keepers in Europe, even if in mid-tier leagues like Belgium (Horvath for example).

Belgian and Dutch clubs have a much smaller budget. If they think their similar talent they’ll stick with the euro player because it will be easier and cheaper to do so. Championship Clubs I’ve wondered as well. My guess is 1 if they have money they have enough money to go out and get someone they feel is better. The other is if they don’t have money it’s cheaper to develop your own or buy a euro from a smaller league than deal with the/scout the MLS.

Frankly, I am not sure what being in a mid-tier European league does to make a keeper any better than one in MLS or other of the top Western hemisphere leagues. I think it is all sort of a wash, other than maybe providing a stepping stone for increased visibility to European teams, but with current technologies and past experience, I don't think that is even that important any more.

Doing well at said club in a mid-tier league is a boost going forward. Whether that's just by league play or perhaps with CL or Europa League matches.

Just curious what makes you think that? I am fine if somebody wants to play in Holland or Belgium, but also don't think it necessarily equates much of a move up any more. Maybe a slight bump up with some European play, but Sacha Kljesten largely remained the same player in my mind. For a GK, I am even less sure about how much of a boost it is.

Well look at Horvath for example. He was 20 playing in Norway (a league far worse than MLS). He's 23 now playing for the best/2nd best team in Belgium. Improvement.

There's been several MLS keepers who made the move to Scandinavia. Maybe that was their skill set. But i'd be curious if several who were B-list or so (those too good for MLS, but not good enough for a top 5 league) might have fared in a Belgium/Netherlands/Turkey.

Pretty clear who's Berhalter's 4th choice besides Steffen, Horvath, Guzan. Berhalter had mentioned this about Johnson in the press conference following the callups.

Amazing that Steffen had only played 7 NT games prior to this match.

Well he and Horvath are both young for keepers, the same age actually. I imagine those numbers will continue to climb!
