I honestly would be happy if it became an official 5th sport. To be good enough to recognized on sports center or the average nightly news or afternoon talk radio.
I agree. Also SUM gets more money than just TV deal, League wide marketing, 30% (or so) of all ticket sales, flat fees on some endorsements, the rights the Mexican National team playing in the USA, ect. SUM probably gets the 100-150M (maybe more), sends around 15M to 20M to USSF for NT rights, then pays salaries (players and staff) and any profits/left over get kicked back to the shareholders (25% to PEP). But it is all just guessing.
For perspective http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/19703254/salary-cap-2m-less-expected-nba-tells-teams teams are disappointed they their salary cap only increased by our total cap.
https://www.mlssoccer.com/league/official-rules/mls-roster-rules-and-regulations From the above website: On-Budget: Senior Roster Up to 20 players, occupying roster spots 1-20, count against the club's 2017 salary budget of $3,845,000, and are referred to collectively as the club's Senior Roster. Roster spots 19 and 20 are not required to be filled, and teams may spread their salary budget across only 18 Salary Budget Players. A minimum salary budget charge will be imputed against a team's salary budget for each unfilled senior roster spot below 18. A Club may have no more than twenty Players on its Senior Roster, subject to the Season-ending Injury Replacement, Disabled List, and loan exceptions. The maximum budget charge for a single player is $480,625. (See Allocation Money sectionbelow for details on buying down a player's budget charge.)

I know its been said before and some might not want to hear it, don't kill me - but what if we changed the name MLS to the North American Premier League. That name would go along way as far as sexiness goes for starters. MLS is our league but the name is wack imo
The thing is, those shows cost hardly anything to make. Its not like a Game Of Thrones episode that cost nearly $10 million bucks to make per episode. All you need is a nice clean studio and lets some talking heads run their mouth. With Espn all their money goes to the live sports
Target is jumping on board and MLS just signed a new deal with Adidas. It seems like the tide is beginning to change. I know that the Silva deal was pure bs, but I dont think the dollar figure was completely crazy. I think MLS can get a 3, 4, or even 5 time increase per team in the next TV/streaming deal in 2022. If that happens, I think you can put MLS in that conversation.
I think using Premier League in the title would subject us to more ridicule than ever from Eurowankers. On the other hand, the next time a West Coast team has a morning kick-off you could say "I love the smell of NAPL in the morning". It may be worth it just for that.
No offense, but thats a turrible idea. We can't be England and shouldn't mimic them. That said MLS name should be changed.
The idea that anyone still believes that the name of the damn league could have the slightest impact on whether or not a single person on the planet does or doesn't tune in is so stupid and nonsensical that I can't believe I haven't started thread-banning people who say it.
I never said anything about renaming MLS would draw viewers. I just think MLS is a terrible name. Are you ok?
This I can understand. I think the name is fine, but I understand that someone could find it wanting, but there's incredible brand equity now. Calling anything "X Premier League" is terrible, though. No need to say the league is a wannabe EPL. It invites direct comparison to the clear financial superpower of the sport, and one of the two best in top to bottom quality.
Why? MLS would have to change all their branding. Nobody says the name of MLB is stupid. I suppose you could label it the National Soccer League (like the NFL and NBA), but NSL is too similar to NASL, which has a whole different set of connotations. When people hear "Premier League", they automatically think of England. La Liga, Serie A, and Bundesliga all bring to mind their nation of origin. In 20 year MLS will be considered in the same light.
